At least five HIF stabilizers are now in phase III trials and may appear on the market in 1-2 years. The long-term effects and safety of HIF stabilization should be carefully examined in future basic and clinical studies.
The activation of Adrb2 signaling in macrophages induces anti-inflammatory phenotypic alterations partially via the induction of Tim3 expression, which blocks LPS-induced systemic inflammation and protects against renal IRI.
Gastric stromal sarcomas demonstrate characteristic MR imaging features, which correspond well with histopathologic findings. The direct multiplanar capability of MR imaging facilitates delineation of relationships of the tumors to the stomach and surrounding organs.
Dietary contents and their metabolites are closely related to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. Advanced glycated end products (AGEs) are a type of uremic toxin produced by glycation. AGE accumulation is not only the result of elevated glucose levels or reduced renal clearance capacity, but it also promotes CKD progression. Indoxyl sulfate, another uremic toxin derived from amino acid metabolism, accumulates as CKD progresses and induces tubulointerstitial fibrosis and glomerular scleros
SUMMARY A new type of endo‐pectic acid transeliminase was isolated from the culture medium of a strain of Bacillus. The enzyme attacked pectic substances randomly and produced un saturated trigalacturonic acid as the major end product. The optimum pH on either acid‐soluble pectic acid or tetragalaeturonic acid was 9.3–9.7, and the enzyme required calcium ions for maximum activity. Strontium was the only other divalent cation which stimulated activity. Trigalacturonic acid was attacked very slowl
SUMMARY: The changes in polygalacturonase (PG) activity during ripening and the relationship between its activity and the quality of Deglet Noor dates were studied. PG activity, which was virtually absent at the green stage, began to develop as maturity progressed. The greatest part of the development occurred at the late red stage and activity reached its maximum when the fruits commenced softening. Among the four grades of dates used in this study the activity was highest with natural, followe
Organelles play important roles in maintaining cellular homeostasis. Organelle stress responses, especially in mitochondria, endoplasmic reticula (ER), and primary cilia, are deeply involved in kidney disease pathophysiology. Mitochondria are the center of energy production in most eukaryotic cells. Renal proximal tubular cells are highly energy demanding and abundant in mitochondria. Mitochondrial dysfunctions in association with energy metabolism alterations produce reactive oxygen species and
Alterations in renal energy metabolism including the accumulation of tricarboxylic acid cycle and glucose metabolites are observed in the early stage of DKD, and they finally lead to mitochondrial dysfunction in advanced DKD. Mitochondrial fission-fusion imbalance and dysregulated organelle crosstalk might contribute to this process. Moreover, metabolomics has identified several uremic toxins including phenyl sulfate and tryptophan derivatives as promising biomarkers that mediate DKD progression
ABSTRACT: A method to recover multi‐gram quantities of limonoid glucosides from citrus molasses using ion‐exchange and styrene/divinylbenzene resins has been developed. A cation exchange resin is used to decolorize the molasses, while an anion exchanger is used to separate limonoid glucosides from other negatively charged compounds. Styrene/divinylbenzene resins are used to bind limonoid glucosides and remove water‐soluble materials. The method affords approximately 5 grams of a water‐soluble po
A 67-year-old man with elevated serum immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) levels, systemic lymphadenopathy infiltrated by IgG4-positive plasma cells, and Coombs-positive autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) showed marked hypercalcemia. Although the intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) level was elevated, 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy and thyroid ultrasonography revealed no evidence of primary hyperparathyroidism. Liver biopsy showed marked infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells, which confirmed the diagnosis of Ig
The autonomic nervous system plays critical roles in maintaining homeostasis in humans, directly regulating inflammation by altering the activity of the immune system. The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway is a well-studied neuroimmune interaction involving the vagus nerve. CD4-positive T cells expressing β2 adrenergic receptors and macrophages expressing the alpha 7 subunit of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in the spleen receive neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and acetylcholi
