Seog Ju Kim 교수의 연구실은 주로 정신건강과 수면, 특히 외상 후 스트레스 장애(PTSD), 주의력결핍과잉행동장애(ADHD), 난센절라 등 수면 및 정서조절 관련 신경생물학적 기전을 탐구하고 있습니다. 뇌 영상(DTI, MRS 등)과 심리평가를 융합한 다학제적 접근을 통해 뇌 구조와 기능의 변화가 정서적·인지적 기능에 미치는 영향을 규명하고 있으며, 특히 청소년 및 청소년기 외상 유병자 집단을 중심으로 임상적 적용 가능성을 모색하고 있습니다.

Previously, our group reported the altered white matter tract integrity of the left anterior cingulate in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in whole-brain exploration. Increased weekend catch-up sleep as an indicator of insufficient weekday sleep is associated with poor performance on objective attention tasks. Assessment of catch-up sleep and sleep duration may be useful for physicians to evaluate sleep insufficiency and its adverse effects on attention in adolescents.
We aimed to investigate the association between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and morningness–eveningness in adulthood. The current study reports that young adults with narcolepsy had a higher GABA concentration in the medial prefrontal cortex, which was more prominent in patients without nocturnal sleep disturbance. Our findings suggest that the medial prefrontal GABA level may be increased in narcolepsy, and the increased medial prefrontal GABA might be a compensatory mechanism to reduce nocturnal sleep disturbances in narcolepsy.

These findings highlight the important role of prefrontal cortex function during emotion regulation in the associations between stress, sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms. Increasing lateral prefrontal cortex recruitment when regulating the emotional response to negative life events may be critical for the prevention and intervention of depression as well as sleep problems.
