Omija (Schizandra chinensis) is used as an ingredient in traditional medicine in East Asia. It is consumed as tea and wine and display pinkish-red color and beneficial physiological activity. However, the origin of Omija's unique color and bioactivity has not been studied extensively and its application is very limited. Thus, it was required to determine the chemical structure of major phenolic compounds of Omija fruit and evaluate their antioxidant activity. The colorants extracted from a domes
Rhinacanthus nasutus (L.) Kurz (Acanthaceae) is known as traditional medicine for the treatment of fungal and herpes virus infections. A new naphthoquinone racemate, rhinacasutone (1) together with seven known compounds, rhinacanthone (2), rhinacanthins C, D, N, Q, and E (3-7), and heliobuphthalmin (8) were isolated from root of R. nasutus. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic methods, including 1D-, 2D-NMR and MS data. All the isolated compounds were tested f
The protective activity of prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus indica var. saboten) fruit juice and its main constituent, betanin, were evaluated against stress-induced acute gastric lesions in rats. After 6 h of water immersion restraint stress (WIRS), gastric mucosal lesions with bleeding were induced in Sprague-Dawley rats. Pretreatment of a lyophilized powder containing O. ficus indica var. saboten fruit juice and maltodextrin (OFSM) and betanin significantly reduced stress lesions (800-1600
Three dibenzylbutyrolactone lignans, (-)-arctigenin, (-)-traxillagenin, and (-)-4'-demethyltraxillagenin, isolated from the bark of Torreya nucifera SIEB. et ZUCC. (Taxaceae) showed significant hepatoprotective activity in primary cultures of rat hepatocytes injured by carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)). These lignans reduced the release of glutamic pyruvic transaminase into the culture medium from the CCl(4)-injured primary cultures of rat hepatocytes. Further investigation revealed that the three l
Seven new muurolane-type sesquiterpenes, (4R,5R)-muurol-1(6),10(14)-diene-4,5-diol (1), (4R,5R)-muurol-1(6)-ene-4,5-diol (2), (4R,5R,10R)-10-methoxymuurol-1(6)-ene-4,5-diol (3), (4S)-4-hydroxy-1,10-seco-muurol-5-ene-1,10-dione (4), (4R)-4-hydroxy-1,10-seco-muurol-5-ene-1,10-dione (5), (6S,10S)-6,10-dihydroxy-7,8-seco-2,8-cyclo-muurol-4(5),7(11)-diene-12-oic acid (6), and (6R,10S)-6,10-dihydroxy-7,8-seco-2,8-cyclo-muurol-4(5),7(11)-diene-12-oic acid (7) were isolated from the marine sponge Dyside
Metabolomics is a useful tool for comparing metabolite changes in plants. Because of its high sensitivity, metabolomics combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) is the most widely accepted metabolomics tools. In this study, we compared the metabolites of pathogen-infected rice (<i>Oryza sativa</i>) with control rice using an untargeted metabolomics approach. We profiled the mass features of two rice groups using a liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (
Gastritis is a common disease worldwide that is caused by various causes such as eating habits, smoking, severe stress, and heavy drinking, as well as <i>Helicobacter pylori</i> infections and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. <i>Cinnamomum cassia</i> is a tropical aromatic evergreen tree commonly used as a natural medicine in Asia and as a functional food ingredient. Studies have reported this species' anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and cardiovascular disease suppression effects. We evaluate
Chinese chive (<i>Allium tuberosum</i>) is a medicinal food that is cultivated and consumed mainly in Asian countries. Its various phytochemicals and physiological effects have been reported, but only a few phytochemicals are available for skeletal muscle cell proliferation. Herein, we isolated a new compound, kaempferol-3-<i>O</i>-(6″-feruloyl)-sophoroside (<b>1</b>), along with one known flavonoid glycoside (<b>2</b>) and six amino acid (<b>3</b>-<b>8</b>) compounds from the water-soluble frac
<i>Gymnema sylvestre</i>, a medicinal plant, has been used in Indian ayurvedic traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes. Phytochemical investigation of <i>Gymnema sylvestre</i> led to the isolation of five new pregnane glycosides, gymsylosides A-E (<b>1</b>-<b>5</b>) and four known oleanane saponins, 3β-<i>O-</i>β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl oleanolic acid 28-<i>O-</i>β-D-glucopyranosyl ester (<b>6</b>), gymnemoside-W1 (<b>7</b>), 3β-<i>O-</i>β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-
Brevilin A, which has anticancer activities against a range of cancers, is an abundant constituent of the medicinal herb <i>Centipeda minima</i> (L.) A. Braun & Asch, which has also been reported to have anticancer activity against breast cancer cells. However, the anticancer activities of <i>C. minima</i> and brevilin A against human gastric cancer have yet to be reported. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity and molecular basis underlying the anticancer activities of extracts o
