The present study indicates that the recommendation of low BMI as a means of obtaining a survival advantage in the elderly is not supported. Instead, higher lean mass and higher LMI are associated with better survival in the elderly Asian population.
Several studies have suggested a potential effect of serum bilirubin as an antioxidant and cytoprotectant factor. For the results presented here, we evaluated the correlation between serum bilirubin and diabetes mellitus (DM) or chronic kidney disease originated from DM (DMCKD) in a Korean population. We used a cross-sectional, population-based design to examine 93,909 subjects (aged 18-96 years, 53.0% male). The trend of P values in the odds ratios for being DM and DMCKD was calculated using pa
A meta-analysis that included results in Korean patients suggests a higher risk for death in elderly patients receiving PD than in those receiving HD.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major health concern, because AKI is related with an increase in morbidity and mortality. Anemia is related to AKI in several clinical settings. However, the relationship between anemia and AKI and the effect of anemia on long-term mortality are unresolved in critically ill patients. A total of 2,145 patients admitted to the intensive care unit were retrospectively analyzed. We calculated a threshold value of hemoglobin associated with an increased risk of AKI and
Although recurrent IgA nephropathy (IgAN) may lead to graft dysfunction after transplantation, donation from living related donor (LRD), with whom the risk of recurrence may be higher, is not a contraindication. Herein, we evaluated the natural history of allograft in recipients with IgAN and the risk factors influencing long-term allograft outcome. Recurrence rate and graft survival were assessed retrospectively in 221 IgAN patients, including transplants from 139 LRDs (62.9%). Ten-year cumulat
AKI duration is an additional parameter for the prediction of mortality in critically ill patients. The inclusion of AKI duration could be considered as a refinement of the AKI criteria.
Low or high counts of white blood cells (WBCs) and WBC subtypes can be a predictor of morbidity and mortality in several clinical settings. However, the correlations of WBC and its subtypes with acute kidney injury (AKI) and mortality remain unresolved in critically ill patients. The counts of WBC and subtypes, such as neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and eosinophil, were measured in 2,079 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) from June 2004 through June 2010. The non-linear relati
Proteinuria and hematuria are associated with the risks of AKI and mortality in critically ill patients. Additionally, these findings had a synergistic effect with AKI on mortality.
Although some AKI cases were not identified by the UOCr alone, the UOCr has an additional role in AKI staging, regardless of diuretic use.
In addition to traditional risk factors of mortality, nephrologists should be aware of HRQOL as a predictor of mortality and should make efforts to improve HRQOL in CKD patients.
The relationship between body fat mass and vitamin D appears to vary by ethnicity, but our understanding of this predisposition in Asians is limited due to the scarcity of prior investigations. Data on 1,697 Korean adults were obtained from the second and third years (2008-2009) of the fourth Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. Body fat mass was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Both linear regression analysis for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and logi
Sodium level at the start of CRRT was a strong predictor of mortality. However, changes in sodium level and the degree of sodium correction were not associated with the mortality risk in the patients with CRRT.
Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is a dialysis modality used to treat patients with severe acute kidney injury. Nevertheless, there is limited information on the predictors of weaning from CRRT. The present study examined whether the N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) can predict weaning from CRRT, based on the fact that this cardiac neurohormone is known to predict kidney dysfunction. Plasma NT-proBNP and several other baseline parameters at the time of st
