We examined the effects of minocycline, an anti-inflammatory drug, on functional recovery following spinal cord injury (SCI). Rats received a mild, weight-drop contusion injury to the spinal cord and were treated with the vehicle or minocycline at a dose of 90 mg/kg immediately after SCI and then twice at a dose of 45 mg/kg every 12 h. Injecting minocycline after SCI improved hind limb motor function as determined by the Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor open field behavioral rating test.

Although 60-W wireless power transfer (WPT) was demonstrated in 2007, still there is no equivalent circuit model for a submeter air-gap, hundreds of watts, and high-efficiency wireless system. A design-oriented circuit model is needed for this technology to evolve. This paper proposes an equivalent circuit model for the wireless system and analyzes the system based on the proposed model. The proposed model and its analysis are validated by means of finite-element analysis (FEA) and experimental
Many anatomical factors, such as bone geometry and muscle condition, interact to affect human movements. This work aims to build a comprehensive musculoskeletal model and its control system that reproduces realistic human movements driven by muscle contraction dynamics. The variations in the anatomic model generate a spectrum of human movements ranging from typical to highly stylistic movements. To do so, we discuss scalable and reliable simulation of anatomical features, robust control of under
The intergrain magnetoresistance (IMR) observed in polycrystalline half-metallic ferromagnets at temperatures below the Curie temperature ${T}_{C}$ was investigated. The systematics of the IMR, as a function of field and temperature for ferromagnetic manganites with varying ${T}_{C}$, shows that the high field magnetoconductivity (MC), rather than the magnetoresistance, is linear with magnetic field and the slope monotonically decreases with increasing ${T}_{C}$. The low field MC value in the lo
We have investigated the influence of pH and ionic strength on the conformation of porcine gastric mucin (PGM) in bulk aqueous solution, its adsorption behavior onto poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surfaces, and its lubricating behavior upon the self-mated sliding contact of a PDMS tribopair by means of circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS), and pin-on-disk tribometry, respectively. In a low-concentration regime (1 mg/mL), where the formation of a mu
Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is one of the most important insect pests in the world. In the present study, the taxonomic status of B. tabaci and the number of species composing the B. tabaci complex were determined based on 1059 COI sequences of B. tabaci and 509 COI sequences of 153 hemipteran species. The genetic divergence within B. tabaci was conspicuously higher (on average, 11.1%) than interspecific genetic divergence within the respective genera of the 153 species (on average,
We report a comparative study of the structure and frictional properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) generated by the adsorption of three homologous 17-carbon alkanethiolsheptadecanethiol, 2,2-dipentadecyl-1,3-propanedithiol, and 2-pentadecyl-1,3-propanedithiolonto the surface of Au(111). The structural properties of these SAMs were characterized by atomic force microscopy, surface infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, spectral ellipsometry, and wettability by water an
We report a simple modification of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) surfaces with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) through the adsorption of a graft copolymer, poly(l-lysine)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) (PLL-g-PEG) from aqueous solution. In this approach, the PDMS surface was treated with oxygen plasma, followed by immersion into aqueous solution containing PLL-g-PEG copolymers. Due to the hydroxyl/carboxylic groups generated on the PDMS surface after oxygen plasma, the polycationic PLL backbone is attr
The rapid rate of technological development and the growing complexity of society in recent years have brought renewed awareness of the importance of higher education. The rapid expansion of higher education, both in size and quality, requires systematic approaches and dynamic planning for efficient resource allocation on the part of the university administrators. This paper presents a goal programming model for an optimum allocation of resources in an institution of higher learning.
We attempted to ascertain the neuroprotective effects and mechanisms of minocycline in inflammatory-mediated neurotoxicity using primary neuron/glia co-cultures treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Neuronal cell death was induced by treatment with LPS for 48 h, and the cell damage was assessed using lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays and by counting microtubule-associated protein-2 (MAP-2) positive cells. Through terminal transferase deoxyuridine triphosphate-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL)-s
Abstract Virtually all models developed for transportation problems have focused upon the optimization of a single objective criterion, namely the minimization of total transportation costs. They have generally neglected or often ignored the multiple conflicting objectives involved in the problem, the priority structure of these objectives, various environmental constraints, unique organizational values of the firm, and bureaucratic decision structures. However, in reality these are important fa
Alkanethiols possessing terminal phenyl groups (C6H5(CH2)nSH, n = 12−15) were adsorbed onto the surface of gold to afford phenyl-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The SAMs were characterized by optical ellipsometry, polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle goniometry. The films generated from the phenyl-terminated alkanethiols exhibited greater thicknesses but similar crystallinities and well-order
