Hormonal disturbances, such as hyperandrogenism, are considered important for developing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in humans. Accordingly, directly hormone-regulated animal models are widely used for studying PCOS, as they replicate several key PCOS features. However, the pathogenesis and treatment of PCOS are still unclear. In this review, we aimed to investigate animal PCOS models and PCOS-like phenotypes in animal experiments without direct hormonal interventions and determine the unde
Sex steroids influence the maintenance and growth of muscles. Decline in androgens, estrogens and progesterone by aging leads to the loss of muscular function and mass, sarcopenia. These steroid hormones can interact with different signaling pathways through their receptors. To date, sex steroid hormone receptors and their exact roles are not completely defined in skeletal and smooth muscles. Although numerous studies focused on the effects of sex steroid hormones on different types of cells, st
Conventional fertility preservation methods such as oocyte or embryo cryopreservation are currently insufficient to treat including those patients with prepubertal cancer and premature ovarian failure. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation presents as an alternative but has limitations with a potential risk of reintroducing malignant cells in patients who recover from cancer, those of chemotherapy prior to tissue cryopreservation. The so called "artificial ovary" aims to resolve this issue by transpla
The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of body mass index (BMI) as a predictor of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) outcomes. Two hundred twenty-three IVF-ET cycles in 164 patients under 37 yr using GnRH agonist long protocols were included in this retrospective study. All of the selected cases were divided into two groups by a cutoff of 24 kg/m2 and these two groups were compared in regard to the outcomes of IVF-ET. There were no significant differences be
We investigated the expression of the mitochondrial ATPase6 gene whose product is active in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), and compared it to the expression of Tfam, an important regulator of the transcription and replication of mtDNA. Our aim was to examine a possible relation between mitochondrial gene expression and Down syndrome. The expression of ATPase6 and Tfam was analyzed by RT-PCR amplification of the mRNA in cultured amniocytes from Down syndrome and normal fetuses. The band inte

Age at menarche seemed to be delayed in North Korean refugees. GLM analysis showed that sleep duration and region of residence at menarche were significant influencing factors of age at menarche in this study population.
KK women were found to have a later onset of menopause than KC women, and our results suggest that, apart from the well-known genetic influence, environmental effects play a significant role in determining age at menopause.
In vitro follicle growth (IVFG) strategy is critical in the fertility preservation of cancer survivors; however, its optimal protocol needs to be developed using primate models since the availability of human samples is limited. Only a few previous studies have reported the successful IVFG of rhesus monkey ovaries using low-dose follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (0.3 or 3 ng/mL) and long-term culture (up to 5 weeks) and it is still uncertain in regard to the optimal culture duration and effecti
In Brief Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship of polymorphisms in the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, TNF-β, and TNF receptor (TNFR) genes to circulating TNF, soluble TNFR (sTNFR) levels, and bone mineral density (BMD) in women. Methods: The TNF-α G(−308)A, C(−857)T, C(−863)A, T(−1031)C, TNF-β A252G, TNFRI A36G, TNFRII T676G, A1663G, A1668G, and C1690T polymorphisms were analyzed in 377 postmenopausal Korean women. The levels of serum TNF-α, TNF-β, sTNFRI, s
The expression profile of microRNA (miRNA) in uterine leiomyoma (UL) cells is different from that in normal uterine myometrial (UM) cells. The effect of UL cells on uterine receptivity might vary according to their ability to distort the uterine endometrial cavity. However, the variation in miRNA expression profiles between endometrial cavity-distorting leiomyoma (ECDL) and endometrial cavity non-distorting leiomyoma (ECNDL) cells remains unknown. This study aimed to elucidate whether the expres
In vitro culture of ovarian follicles is a promising bioengineering technique for retrieving fertilizable oocytes from preserved ovarian tissues of cancer survivors. However, current in vitro follicle culture techniques are labour-intensive and of low efficiency, as only single follicle culture (SFC) has been possible to date. The present study investigated the feasibility of multifollicular cluster culture (MFCC) system using angiotensin II receptor (ATII-Rc) analogues. Ovarian pre-antral folli
