The lifetime and spatial distributions of accumulation-mode aerosols in a size range of approximately 0.05-1 μm, and thus their global and regional climate impacts, are primarily constrained by their removal via cloud and precipitation (wet removal). However, the microphysical process that predominantly controls the removal efficiency remains unidentified because of observational difficulties. Here, we demonstrate that the activation of aerosols to cloud droplets (nucleation scavenging) predomin
Long-term measurements of black carbon (BC) aerosols by filter-based absorption photometers with a heated inlet (COSMOS) in different regions have been useful in elucidating spatial variations and radiative impacts of BC. Evaluations of mass concentrations of BC (MBC) measured by the COSMOS have been made by our previous studies through comparisons with other measurement techniques. However, how variations in the microphysical properties of BC and the co-existing light scattering aerosols affect
Abstract Black carbon (BC) aerosols become internally mixed with non‐BC compounds (BC coatings) during aging in the atmosphere. In this study, we measured the hygroscopicity parameter κ on a single‐particle basis for both BC‐coating materials ( κ BC‐coat ) and BC‐free particles ( κ BC‐free ) in the urban atmosphere of Tokyo, using a single‐particle soot photometer (SP2). In our measurement system, dry ambient particles were first mass selected by an aerosol particle mass analyzer, then humidifie
Abstract. Long-term measurements of atmospheric mass concentrations of black carbon (BC) are needed to investigate changes in its emission, transport, and deposition. However, depending on instrumentation, parameters related to BC such as aerosol absorption coefficient (babs) have been measured instead. Most ground-based measurements of babs in the Arctic have been made by filter-based absorption photometers, including particle soot absorption photometers (PSAPs), continuous light absorption pho
We conducted a detailed evaluation of a method for measuring the mass concentrations and size distributions of black carbon (BC) particles in rainwater and snow. The method uses an ultrasonic nebulizer (USN) and a single particle soot photometer (SP2). The USN disperses sample water into micron-size droplets at a constant rate and then dries them to release BC particles into the air. The masses of individual BC particles are measured by the SP2, using the laser-induced incandescence technique. T
Abstract. Aerosol particles were collected at various altitudes in the Arctic during the Polar Airborne Measurements and Arctic Regional Climate Model Simulation Project 2018 (PAMARCMiP 2018) conducted in the early spring of 2018. The composition, size, number fraction, and mixing state of individual aerosol particles were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their sources and transport were evaluated by numerical model simulations. We found that sulfate, sea-salt, mineral-
Abstract Light‐absorbing iron oxide (FeO x ) aerosols such as magnetite contribute to shortwave atmospheric heating and possibly affect the biogeochemical cycle. However, their atmospheric abundance and emission sources are poorly understood. In this study, we quantified the abundance and mixing states of FeO x at two urban sites in Tokyo and Chiba, Japan, using a modified single‐particle soot photometer and filter‐based instruments. At both sites, the majority of the FeO x were of anthropogenic
We make detailed evaluations of a method of measuring the mass concentration and size distribution of black carbon (BC) particles suspended in water for the purpose of application to rainwater samples. Water samples were aerosolized with an ultrasonic nebulizer. Generated water droplets were dried in order to extract airborne BC particles. The mass of each BC particle was then measured by a Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2), based on the laser-induced incandescence technique. Under the optim
Abstract. Vertical profiles of the mass concentration of black carbon (BC) were measured at altitudes up to 5 km during the PAMARCMiP (Polar Airborne Measurements and Arctic Regional Climate Model simulation Project) aircraft-based field experiment conducted around the northern Greenland Sea (Fram Strait) during March and April 2018 from operation base Station Nord (81.6∘ N, 16.7∘ W). Median BC mass concentrations in individual altitude ranges were 7–18 ng m−3 at standard temperature and pressur
Abstract. Aerosol light absorption was measured during a 1-month field campaign in June–July 2019 at the Pallas Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) station in northern Finland. Very low aerosol concentrations prevailed during the campaign, which posed a challenge for the instruments' detection capabilities. The campaign provided a real-world test for different absorption measurement techniques supporting the goals of the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) Black Carbon (B

Abstract. Long-term measurements of black carbon (BC) are warranted for investigating changes in its emission, transport, and deposition. However, depending on instrumentation, parameters related to BC such as aerosol absorption coefficient (babs) have been measured instead. Water-insoluble aerosol particles (WIAPs), such as black carbon (BC), mineral dust, and primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs), affect climate through their interaction with radiation and clouds. However, with the exception of BC, methods to identify WIAP types and quantify their number concentrations are limited. Here, we evaluated a method that has been recently developed to measure the number concentrations of submicron WIAPs based on atmospheric aerosol measurements at an urban site in
Abstract Mineral dust accounts for a significant fraction of the atmospheric aerosol burden, impacting climate through its interactions with radiation and clouds. However, limited observations of dust particles in the free troposphere hinder our understanding of its spatial distribution and climatic impacts. In this study, aerosols were collected on filters using aircraft over the western North Pacific at 0.2–8 km altitudes in summer 2022. Individual water‐insoluble particles dispersed in water
