The current "epidemic" of thyroid cancer in South Korea is due to an increase in the detection of small tumours, most likely as a result of overdetection. Concerted efforts are needed at a national level to reduce unnecessary thyroid ultrasound examinations in the asymptomatic general population.

With a significantly increasing overweight and physically inactive population, and increasing incidence of breast and colorectal cancers, Korea faces a large cancer burden attributable to these risk factors. Had the obese population of Korea remained stable, a large portion of obesity-related cancers could have been avoided. Efficient cancer prevention programs that aim to reduce obesity- and physical inactivity-related health problems are essential in Korea.
By using a first-principles method employing the local density approximation plus Hubbard parameter approach, we study point defects in NiO and interactions between them. The defect states associated with nickel or oxygen vacancies are identified within the energy gap. It is found that nickel vacancies introduce shallow levels in the density of states for the spin direction opposite to that of the removed Ni atom, while the oxygen vacancy creates more localized in-gap states. The interaction pro
Approximately one in three cancer deaths would be potentially preventable through appropriate control of tobacco smoking in Korean men at the population level and individual level. For Korean women, more lung cancer cases and deaths were attributable to second-hand than ever-smoking. Effective control programs against tobacco smoking should be further developed and implemented in Korea to reduce the smoking-related cancer burden.
A subadditive effect of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection is possible because superinfection of one virus tends to inhibit infection of the other virus. However, studies have reported inconsistent findings, and two meta-analyses of studies from various countries (1998) and China (2005) reported a supraadditive effect for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk. Thus, we reevaluate HBV/HCV monoinfection and coinfection. Of 411 reports, we included 59 studies that assesse
Precarious employment and unemployment were clearly associated with having depression. In addition, in view of our findings, policy makers should consider sex and head of household status when developing welfare policies. The inequity between precarious jobs and permanent jobs should be tackled.
The repeated and extensive BBB opening in the frontal lobe is safe and feasible for patients with AD. In addition, the BBB opening is potentially beneficial for amyloid removal in AD patients.
Introduction: To overcome the blood-brain barrier (BBB) which interferes with the effect of chemotherapeutic agents, we performed multiple disruptions of BBB (BBBD) with magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound on patients with glioblastoma (GBM) during standard adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy [clinical trial registration no.NCT03712293 (clinicaltrials.gov)]. We report a 1-year follow-up result of BBBD with TMZ for GBM. Methods: From September 2018 to January 2019, six
