In plant meristems, each cell divides and differentiates in a spatially and temporally regulated manner, and continuous organogenesis occurs using cells derived from the meristem. We report the identification of the Arabidopsis thaliana TEBICHI (TEB) gene, which is required for regulated cell division and differentiation in meristems. The teb mutants show morphological defects, such as short roots, serrated leaves, and fasciation, as well as defective patterns of cell division and differentiatio
Mono-, di-, and trimethylation of histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4me1/2/3) are associated with transcription, yet it remains controversial whether H3K4me1/2/3 promote or result from transcription. Our previous characterizations of Arabidopsis H3K4 demethylases suggest roles for H3K4me1 in transcription. However, the control of H3K4me1 remains unexplored in Arabidopsis, in which no methyltransferase for H3K4me1 has been identified. Here, we identify three Arabidopsis methyltransferases that direct H3K4m
Spatio-temporal regulation of gene expression during development depends on many factors. Mutations in Arabidopsis thaliana TEBICHI (TEB) gene encoding putative helicase and DNA polymerase domains-containing protein result in defects in meristem maintenance and correct organ formation, as well as constitutive DNA damage response and a defect in cell cycle progression; but the molecular link between these phenotypes of teb mutants is unknown. Here, we show that mutations in the DNA replication ch
We show a growth of high-quality thin films of a wide bandgap semiconductor copper iodide (CuI) on Al2O3 substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Employing a thin buffer layer deposited at a lower temperature (160 °C) prior to the main growth, the maximum growth temperature is elevated up to 240 °C, resulting in a significant improvement in the crystallinity as verified by sharp x-ray diffraction peaks as well as a step-and-terrace structure observed by atomic force microscopy. Optimum films show m
Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of plants with T-DNA is used both to introduce transgenes and for mutagenesis. Conventional approaches used to identify the genomic location and the structure of the inserted T-DNA are laborious and high-throughput methods using next-generation sequencing are being developed to address these problems. Here, we present a cost-effective approach that uses sequence capture targeted to the T-DNA borders to select genomic DNA fragments containing T-DNA-genome jun
Transposable elements (TEs) are epigenetically silenced with extensive DNA methylation. The silent epigenetic marks should, however, be excluded from active genes. By genetic approaches, we study mechanisms to remove the heterochromatin marks from transcribed genes. Based on our observations on control of TE transcription, we propose a possible trigger for the TE-specific accumulation of DNA methylation. A critical difference between TEs and genes could be their responses to the DNA methylation
Cuprous iodide (CuI) is an emerging wide-bandgap semiconductor of superior optical and transport properties. In particular, CuI shows high stability and large oscillator strength of free excitons that are of great advantage for optoelectronic applications. However, thin films of CuI reported so far have not been genuine single crystals, containing a sizable density of impurity and defect. Here, we demonstrate a dramatic improvement in the quality of CuI films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a
Histone H3 lysine-9 methylation (H3K9me) is a hallmark of the condensed and transcriptionally silent heterochromatin. It remains unclear how H3K9me controls transcription silencing and how cells delimit H3K9me domains to avoid silencing essential genes. Here, using Arabidopsis genetic systems that induce H3K9me2 in genes and transposons de novo, we show that H3K9me2 accumulation paradoxically also causes the deposition of the euchromatic mark H3K36me3 by a SET domain methyltransferase, AS

Photoresponsive ferroelectrics are recently under intense study due to their potential application to photovoltaic devices. Antimony sulfoiodide (SbSI) is a prototypical compound that possesses both ferroelectricity and a strong visible-light-response. However, most of the SbSI films reported so far have a polycrystalline structure with a randomly oriented polarization axis. In this study, we have fabricated c-axis textured SbSI thin films through annealing of amorphous films deposited in a mole
