Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is an ingestible video camera that transmits high-quality images of the small intestinal mucosa. This makes the small intestine more readily accessible to physicians investigating the presence of small bowel disorders, such as Crohn's disease (CD). Although VCE is frequently performed in Korea, there are no evidence-based guidelines on the appropriate use of VCE in the diagnosis of CD. To provide accurate information and suggest correct testing approaches for small
The field effect is present in CRC and affects both the adjacent and nonadjacent normal-appearing mucosa.
Our results demonstrate that the <i>SFRP2</i>, <i>TFPI2</i>, <i>NDRG4</i>, and <i>BMP3</i> promoter methylation analysis of stool sample DNA showed high sensitivity but low specificity for detecting CRC and AA. Because of the low specificity, 4 methylated markers might not be sufficient for CRC screening in the Korean population. Further large-scale studies are required to validate the methylation of these markers in the Asian population and to find new markers for the Asian population.
miR-21-5p may be useful as a predictor of recurrence in young GC patients whose tumors contain a high proportion of intratumoral stroma. The combination of this miRNA with conventional clinicopathological factors should allow patient prognoses to be more accurately predicted.
Patients with COVID-19 have been reported to experience gastrointestinal symptoms as well as respiratory symptoms, but the effects of COVID-19 on the gut microbiota are poorly understood. We explored gut microbiome profiles associated with the respiratory infection of SARS-CoV-2 during the recovery phase in patients with asymptomatic or mild COVID-19. A longitudinal analysis was performed using the same patients to determine whether the gut microbiota changed after recovery from COVID-19. We app
Colonoscopists' ADRs and APC were significantly correlated. Moreover, as the correlation coefficient for AADR was higher with APC than it was with ADR, APC might be a better quality indicator of colonoscopy than ADR.
Although the number of patients reaching the primary endpoint did not differ between the EcN and placebo groups, EcN was found to be safe and effective in preventing the exacerbation of IBDQ scores and achieving clinical responses and endoscopic remission in patients with mild-to-moderate UC.
The cumulative incidence of overall and advanced colorectal neoplasms was significantly higher in older patients than in young patient groups. Age was a significant risk factor for developing colorectal neoplasms after removing high-risk adenoma.
The treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been revolutionized for the last 10 years by the increasing use of immunomodulators and biologics. With immunosuppression of this kind, opportunistic infection is an important safety concern for patients with IBD. In particular, viral hepatitis is determined by the interaction between the virus and the host's immunity, and the risk of reactivation increases if immunity is compromised by immunosuppression therapy. Parts of Asia, including Kore
Limited studies have examined the intestinal microbiota composition in relation to Crohn's disease (CD) prognosis. We analyzed the differences in microbial communities and relevant metabolic pathways associated with prognostic variables in patients with CD. We applied 16S rRNA gene sequencing to analyze a cohort of 1110 CD and healthy control (HC) fecal samples. We categorized patients with CD into good (CD-G), intermediate (CD-I) and poor (CD-P) prognosis groups, according to the history of usi
Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) can be difficult to differentiate. As differential diagnosis is important in establishing a long-term treatment plan for patients, we aimed to develop a machine learning model for the differential diagnosis of the two diseases using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data from endoscopic biopsy tissue from patients with inflammatory bowel disease (<i>n</i> = 127; CD, 94; UC, 33). Biopsy samples were taken from inflammatory lesions or normal tissues. The RNA
