Significantly high eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and fucoxanthin contents with high production rate were achieved in semi continuous culture of marine diatom. Effects of dilution rate on the production of biomass and high value biocompounds such as EPA and fucoxanthin were evaluated in semi-continuous cultures of Chaetoceros gracilis under high light condition. Cellular dry weight increased at lower dilution rate and higher light intensity conditions, and cell size strongly affected EPA and
Microalgae are an important renewable source of carotenoids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. In this study, indigenous microalgal strains from fresh, brackish, and marine waters of Peninsular Malaysia were isolated, purified, and cultured. The potential of microalgae as a natural source of lipids and carotenoids was studied using a screening test with Nile red fluorescence dye to examine the lipid and carotenoid
Responses of light-harvesting and photoprotective pigments to the length of dark storage and silicate availability were determined for the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii during dark survival and recovery. During 14-day's darkness, no significant changes in the concentration of silicate were observed, whereas the cell density increased by 34% for 8 days and decreased afterward. All cellular pigment contents decreased sharply between days 3 and 5 and stayed at relatively constant levels o
The subsection Relative abundance of light harvesting pigments (LHP) on Results (p. 7) should be: The percent molar LHP in the DS-Exp remained relatively constant in the mean of 880.94% (Fig. When the cells were exposed to the L : D cycle in the R-Exp, the present molar LHP with respect to the total pigments had a very similar pattern of temporal change among the three silicate availability conditions and the length of dark storage (Fig. They reached a maximum of about 93% on day 1 or 2 and then
To potentially improve the productivity of microalgae for mass culture, growth characteristics and light-saturation index ( ) in the marine microalga were investigated under high-celldensity conditions grown in batch cultures.
The photoresponse of chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence and xanthophyll pigments to light was studied in the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii with respect to various durations of dark storage. The light-limited slope (α) obtained from the electron transport rate (ETR) versus the irradiance curve remained steady, whereas the light-saturated rate (ETRmax) decreased gradually during dark storage. Consequently the light-saturation index (Ek=ETRmax/α) decreased with time, suggesting that cells acclim
SUMMARY The significant concentrations of phosphate in wastewater can be considered as an important fertilizer source. Some microalgae uptake phosphate from wastewater and store it in the form of polyphosphate (polyP). Therefore, biological phosphorus recovery processes have been attracting significant attention recently. However, wastewaters are often rich in ammonium, and so microalgae used for phosphorus recovery should be tolerant of this component. In the present study, 151 microalgae were
Volatile compounds on the one hand, and seaweeds on the other, are known to be antibacterial as established by a number of workers, though a relationship between the two sets of fact has never been suggested yet. The present work has been undertaken to see whether antibacterial action of seaweeds is attributable to their volatile compounds. Separated from volatile compounds of Enteromorpha sp. were: 1) low grade fatty acids soluble in sodium bicarbonate, including formic, acetic, propionic, vale
Recently three dimensional field calculation has been extensively performed by T. Tominaka and M. Okamura on the helical magnet for the RHIC spin snake and rotator. One of the main concerns of field calculation is multipole field components which may have the different values from two dimensional cases. In this report, the analytical formula of multipole field expansion are given to investigate the numerical results of 3 D calculation. The betatron tune shift and local chromaticity due to the he
