This meta-analysis demonstrates that the BRAF(V600E) mutation is closely related to the high-risk clinicopathological factors and poorer outcome of PTC. The results obtained here suggest that the BRAF(V600E) mutation should be considered as a poor prognostic marker in PTC and may lead to better management for individual patients.
TERT promoter mutations are emerging prognostic biomarkers in multiple cancers and are found in highly aggressive thyroid cancer. Our aim is to investigate the prognostic value of these mutations for the outcome of thyroid cancer-related mortality in a large cohort of thyroid cancer patients. This was a retrospective study of 409 patients (393 with differentiated thyroid cancer) with a median age of 44 years (range 16-81 years) and median follow-up of 13 years (interquartile range 11-16 years).
The season in which thyroid testing was performed was independently related to the transition between subclinical hypothyroid and euthyroid status. Seasonal variations in TSH concentration should be considered before deciding on treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism, particularly in the areas with a wide annual temperature range.
The cut-off age of 55 years was more appropriate for TNM staging to achieve better predictability for DSS in patients with DTC. This change would prevent over-staging in low-risk patients and prevent over-aggressive treatment.
Pericardial fat surrounding the heart and coronary arteries might aggravate vessel wall inflammation and stimulate the progression of coronary atherosclerosis. However, there has been little comprehensive evaluation of the effects of pericardial fat on coronary artery disease (CAD). We investigated the relationship between pericardial fat volume and the severity of coronary artery stenosis assessed by computed tomography and angiography among patients with suspected CAD. Participants from the co
Although gross ETE invading only strap muscles may provide prognostic information about long-term recurrence, it does not affect mortality. The actual impact of gross ETE invading only strap muscles will be important in revising the staging system in the future.
This revised initial risk-stratification system based on the presence of ETE and the extent of cervical LN metastasis is useful for predicting the clinical outcomes of pediatric DTC patients. The findings could facilitate the practical use of a risk-stratification system.
The AHR grouping system, a simple two-dimensional prognostic system, is as effective as DRS at predicting structural recurrence and provides clinical implication for long-term CSS in patients with nonmetastatic DTC.
Lymph node metastasis (LNM) in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is usually detected with preoperative ultrasonography; however, this has limited sensitivity for small metastases, and there is currently no predictive biomarker that can help to inform the extent of surgery required. We evaluated whether preoperative serum thyroglobulin levels can predict tumor burden and extent. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 4029 DTC cases diagnosed and treated at a Samsung Medical Center
Our research group has previously shown that the presence of TERT promoter mutations is an independent prognostic factor, by applying the TERT mutation status to the variables of the AJCC 7th edition. This study aimed to determine if TERT mutations could be independent predictors of thyroid cancer-specific mortality based on the AJCC TNM 8th edition, with long-term follow-up. This was a retrospective study of 393 patients with pathologically confirmed differentiated thyroid
