It is now widely accepted that skin sensitivity will be very important for future robots used by humans in daily life for housekeeping and entertainment purposes. Despite this fact, relatively little progress has been made in the field of pressure recognition compared to the areas of sight and voice recognition, mainly because good artificial "electronic skin" with a large area and mechanical flexibility is not yet available. The fabrication of a sensitive skin consisting of thousands of pressur
We introduce a method to fabricate high-performance field-effect transistors on the surface of freestanding organic single crystals. The transistors are constructed by laminating a monolithic elastomeric transistor stamp against the surface of a crystal. This method, which eliminates exposure of the fragile organic surface to the hazards of conventional processing, enables fabrication of rubrene transistors with charge carrier mobilities as high as approximately 15 cm2/V.s and subthreshold slope
Skin-like sensitivity, or the capability to recognize tactile information, will be an essential feature of future generations of robots, enabling them to operate in unstructured environments. Recently developed large-area pressure sensors made with organic transistors have been proposed for electronic artificial skin (E-skin) applications. These sensors are bendable down to a 2-mm radius, a size that is sufficiently small for the fabrication of human-sized robot fingers. Natural human skin, howe
Abstract Extensive efforts have been devoted during the last decade to organic solar cell research that has led to remarkable progress and achieved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in excess of 10%. Among the existing flexible organic solar cells, ultrathin organic solar cells with a total thickness <10 µm have important advantages, including good mechanical bending stabilities and good conformability. These advantages have led to power generation solutions for wearable electronics. In th
Monitoring of finger manipulation without disturbing the inherent functionalities is critical to understand the sense of natural touch. However, worn or attached sensors affect the natural feeling of the skin. We developed nanomesh pressure sensors that can monitor finger pressure without detectable effects on human sensation. The effect of the sensor on human sensation was quantitatively investigated, and the sensor-applied finger exhibits comparable grip forces with those of the bare finger, e
Biocompatible conductors are important components for soft and stretchable bioelectronics for digital healthcare, which have attracted extensive research efforts. Natural biopolymers, compared to other polymers, possess unique features that make them promising building blocks for biocompatible conductors, such as good biocompatibility/biodegradability, natural abundance, sustainability, and capability, can be processed into various functional formats with tunable material properties under benign
We have measured conductance of single-walled semiconducting carbon nanotubes in field-effect transistor (FET) geometry and investigated the device response to alcoholic vapors. We observe significant changes in FET drain current when the device is exposed to various kinds of alcoholic vapors. These responses are reversible and reproducible over many cycles of vapor exposure. Our experiments demonstrate that carbon nanotube FETs are sensitive to a wide range of alcoholic vapors.
Soft strain sensors are needed for a variety of applications including human motion and health monitoring, soft robotics, and human/machine interactions. Capacitive-type strain sensors are excellent candidates for practical applications due to their great linearity and low hysteresis; however, a big limitation of this sensor is its inherent property of low sensitivity when it comes to detecting various levels of applied strain. This limitation is due to the structural properties of the parallel
Organic semiconductor films are susceptible to noncovalent interactions, trapping and doping, photoexcitation, and dimensional deformation. While these effects can be detrimental to the performance of conventional circuits, they can be harnessed, especially in field-effect architectures, to detect chemical and physical stimuli. This Review summarizes recent advances in the use of organic electronic materials for the detection of environmental chemicals, pressure, and light. The material features
Skin bioelectronics are considered as an ideal platform for personalised healthcare because of their unique characteristics, such as thinness, light weight, good biocompatibility, excellent mechanical robustness, and great skin conformability. Recent advances in skin-interfaced bioelectronics have promoted various applications in healthcare and precision medicine. Particularly, skin bioelectronics for long-term, continuous health monitoring offer powerful analysis of a broad spectrum of health s
Flexible organic optoelectronic devices simultaneously targeting mechanical conformability and fast responsivity in the near-infrared (IR) region are a prerequisite to expand the capabilities of practical optical science and engineering for on-skin optoelectronic applications. Here, an ultraflexible near-IR responsive skin-conformal photoplethysmogram sensor based on a bulk heterojunction photovoltaic active layer containing regioregular polyindacenodithiophene-pyridyl[2,1,3]thiadiazole-cyclopen
A large-area, flexible, and lightweight sheet image scanner has been successfully manufactured on a plastic film by integrating high-quality organic transistors and organic photodetectors. The effective sensing area of the integrated device is 5/spl times/5 cm/sup 2/; the resolution, 36 dots per inch (dpi); and the total number of sensor cells, 5184. The pentacene transistors with top contact geometry have a channel length of 18 /spl mu/m and mobility of 0.7 cm/sup 2//Vs. Organic photodetectors
Lasing action has been demonstrated at blue wavelengths in vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers at room temperature. The microcavity was formed by sandwiching indium gallium nitride multiple quantum wells between nitride-based and oxide-based quarter-wave reflectors. Lasing action was observed at a wavelength of 399 nanometers under optical excitation and confirmed by a narrowing of the linewidth in the emission spectra from 0.8 nanometer below threshold to less than 0.1 nanometer (resolution
Ultraconformable strain gauge can be applied directly to human skin for continuous motion activity monitoring, which has seen widespread application in interactive robotics, human motion detection, personal health monitoring, and therapeutics. However, the development of an on-skin strain gauge that can detect human body motions over a long period of time without disturbing the natural skin movements remains a challenge. Here, we present an ultrathin and durable nanomesh strain gauge for continu
