We numerically study dynamics of shape deformations of vesicles resulting from intramembrane phase separation. At off-critical compositions resultant vesicle shapes closely resemble the echinocytosis of red blood cells, while at the critical composition a bicontinuous domain structure emerges. The coarsening process of domain structures on such a deformable surface is considerably slower than that on a rigid surface. The total length of domain boundaries ${N}_{\mathrm{DB}}$ decreases as ${t}^{\e
By solving a viscoelastic model of polymer solutions in two dimensions, we demonstrate that polymer-rich regions can form a spongelike network in deeply quenched cases. In late stages the velocity field is suppressed because the network supports stress and is rigid. As a result the domain size grows as ${t}^{1/3}$. In an early stage the polymer-rich regions are shrunken due to desorption of solvent, whereas in late stages they are elastically expanded perpendicularly to the interface in regions
We investigate equilibrium shapes of vesicles composed of a mixture of partially miscible amphiphiles embedded in two- and three-dimensional space. The amphiphilic molecules can diffuse within the membrane and undergo an intramembrane phase separation below a critical temperature. We assume a simple phenomenological coupling between the local relative composition of the amphiphiles and the local curvature of the membrane shape. A linear stability analysis in the vicinity of the critical temperat
To determine whether heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein is induced by endogenous nitric oxide (NO) in rat glial cultures, we examined the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), and NO donors such as S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), in mixed glial cells and in vivo rat hippocampus. In cultured glial cells, treatment with LPS induced the expression of 130-kd inducible NO synthase (iNOS) after 6 h, and NO2- accumulation and enhancement of the protein level of 33-kd H
We prove the existence of secondary terms of order X5/6 in the Davenport–Heilbronn theorems on cubic fields and 3-torsion in class groups of quadratic fields. For cubic fields this confirms a conjecture of Datskovsky–Wright and Roberts. We also prove a variety of generalizations, including to arithmetic progressions, where we discover a curious bias in the secondary term. Roberts’s conjecture has also been proved independently by Bhargava, Shankar, and Tsimerman. In contrast to their work, our p
