Unmixing kinetics of quenched critical polymer mixture of polystyrene and poly(vinyl methyl ether) was investigated by time-resolved light scattering technique. In the late stage of spinodal decomposition τ>60, τ being a reduced time, a simple dynamic scaling law was found on the scattering function I(q,t); I(q,t)∼ξ(t)3S̃[qξ(t)] with ξ(t)∼ta, where q is the scattering vector and ξ(t)=q−1m(t) is the correlation length of the periodic unmixed structure at time t which is measured by the pos
Abstract Un mixing kinetics and ordering processes of polymer mixtures quenched into thermo-dynamically unstable states are reviewed with particular emphasis on (i) universality in the polymer dynamics in comparison with the dynamics for other systems, such as small molecular fluid mixtures, metallic alloys and inorganic glasses, and (ii) some unique characteristics associated with long-chain molecules (polymer effects, especially the effects resulting from molecular entanglements). The isotherm

The early-to-late stage of the spinodal decomposition (SD) of the critical mixtures of polystyrene and poly(vinyl methyl ether) was investigated by the time-resolved light scattering technique. The early stage SD where the time evolution of the fluctuations can be described, at least with a good approximation, by the linearized theory of Cahn was found to exist in the reduced time scale τ approximately less than 2. The later stage unmixing process (τ>2) was found to give the scaling laws
A novel process to produce a nanochannel comprised of a void in a polymer matrix is reported. The processing involves a selective degradation of one of the bicontinuous microdomain phases of microphase-separated block copolymers to create a continuous, tortuous hole having a diameter of nanometer scale (nanochannel) and plating of the surfaces with nickel metal. The nanochannel and the metal plating were confirmed by the transmission and scanning electron microscopies.
Transmission light micrographs show that domains in spinodal decomposition are elongated into extremely long strings in steady states of a polymer solution under strong shear flow. The shear flow stabilizes the string against their intrinsic surface tension instabilities. The string diameter decreases with increase in the shear rate and ultimately becomes of the order of the interface thickness, resulting in shear-induced homogenization.
