We reviewed 70 patients with lower lip mucoceles for patient characteristics, clinical features, and histopathologic findings. These cases represented approximately 75% of oral mucoceles seen in the Department of Otolaryngology, Takeda General Hospital, between February 1985 and July 1988. Patients were divided almost equally between males and females, with ages ranging from 2 to 63 years, with the highest incidence of lesions occurring in the second decade. Duration of the lesions varied greatl
Heavy metals are often found in soil and can contaminate drinking water, posing a serious threat to human health. Molecular pathways and curation therapies for mitigating heavy metal toxicity have been studied for a long time. Recent studies on oxidative stress and aging have shown that the molecular foundation of cellular damage caused by heavy metals, namely, apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and mitochondrial stress, share the same pathways as those involved in cellular senescence and
These results suggest that ALHL may be caused by endolymphatic hydrops confined to the cochlea and that ALHL does not always lead to cochlear or classic Meniere's disease.
To determine the characteristics of sudden deafness associated with slow blood flow (SBF) within the vertebrobasilar arteries, we evaluated 57 patients with sudden deafness using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We detected SBF in 12 (21%) patients, predominantly men over 50 years of age. A second MRI performed in 5 patients 2 months after the onset of symptoms showed recovery of blood flow. All 12 patients complained of vertigo. Audiological and neurotologic tests suggested that hearing loss m
Gene transfer has been performed in a variety of organs. In the mammalian inner ear, viral vectors have been used to introduce exogenous reporter genes via the scala tympani into the cochlea. While scala tympani inoculation is clinically feasible, it is not without risks. Moreover, transgene expression has so far been restricted to the cochlear tissues in the perilymphatic spaces that are contiguous with the scala tympani. To achieve gene transfer of vestibular organs and cells surrounding the e
