High-affinity nuclear binding sites for 17 beta-estradiol (17 beta E2) were recently found in bone cells; however, the mechanism by which estrogen exerts its effect on bone in vivo is still unknown. To study if estrogen acts on bone directly, we used an experimental model in which test substances are infused locally into rat femur trabecular bone. Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 150-160 g were ovariectomized (OVX) and 14 days later a polyethylene tube (1 mm in diameter) connected to an Alzet osmoti
We investigated the gene expression for non-collagenous proteins in periodontal ligament (PDL) by in situ hybridization histochemistry with a non-radioisotopic probe with cRNAs for osteocalcin (Osc), osteonectin (Osn), and osteopontin (Opn) in rat maxillary dento-alveolar unit containing molars and intact PDL. A highly intense positive signal for Osn and Osc mRNAs was expressed at all distal surfaces of the interradicular septum of buccal roots of the upper second molar in 7-week-old Sprague-Daw
Nocturnal bruxism may be secondary to nocturnal gastroesophageal reflux, occurring via sleep arousal and often together with swallowing. The physiologic link between bruxism and the increase in salivation needs to be investigated.
The purpose of this study was to compare the amount and rate of tooth movement in young and mature rats administered 1,25(OH)2D3 simultaneous with application of mechanical force. In 30 seven-week-old and 30 28-week-old male Wistar rats, the right maxillary first molar was moved buccally with a fixed appliance. The appliances delivered forces ranging from 5 to 20 g. Twenty microL of 1,25(OH)2D3 (10(-10) and 10(-8) mol/L) was injected locally into the submucosal palatal area of the root bifurcati
Orthodontic tooth movement requires remodeling of periodontal tissues, especially alveolar bone. 1,25-(OH)2D3, the active form of vitamin D3, is known to be a potent stimulator of osteoclastic bone resorption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of local application of 1,25-(OH)2D3 on osteoclast numbers induced by experimental tooth movement. A piece of orthodontic elastic band was inserted between the first and second upper molars of male Wistar rats weighing about 200 g eac
