Abstract This paper examines the possible linkage between the recent reduction in Arctic sea‐ice extent and the wintertime Arctic Oscillation (AO)/North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). A 1-year-lagged relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in winter and El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the following year was examined with a multi-model ensemble analysis using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 models.
