Tomoo Sawabe 교수의 연구실은 해양 미생물, 특히 볼리오스균류(Vibrio 등)의 진화적 역사와 병원성 메커니즘을 중심으로 연구를 진행하고 있습니다. 특히 해조류 및 조개류 등 해양 수산생물에서 발생하는 병원성 세균의 분리, 분류 및 병원성 기전 규명에 초점을 맞추고 있으며, 분자생물학적 분석과 병원성 검증(Koch의 후안)을 통해 실제 어류·굴류 등 수산업적 중요 생물의 질병 원인을 규명하고자 합니다. 또한, 새로운 병원성 세균 종의 정의와 분류 기준 수립에도 기여하고 있습니다.

We performed the first broad study aiming at the reconstruction of the evolutionary history of vibrios by means of multilocus sequence analysis of nine genes. Overall, 14 distinct clades were recognized using the SplitsTree decomposition method. Some of these clades may correspond to families, e.g., the clades Salinivibrio and Photobacteria, while other clades, e.g., Splendidus and Harveyi, correspond to genera. An aerobic, polarly flagellated marine bacterium that produces a prodigiosin-like pigment was isolated from the red-spotted culture beds of Laminaria japonica. Five isolates had unique bacteriolytic activity for both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, which had never been observed among Alteromonas or related species. Six alginolytic, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile marine bacteria were isolated from the gut of abalone Haliotis discus hannai. DNA-DNA hybridization data showed that the six strains constituted a single genospecies.
