Smart tourism is a social phenomenon arising from the convergence of information technology with the tourism experience. New ways of doing business, new patterns of experience and new problems concerning tourism destination image management and marketing are emerging due to the ubiquitous presence and influence of the internet and mobile devices. New conceptual tools are also available to enable researchers to further understand the social implications as well as the practical implementation of
Abstract Massive development projects and tourism promotion campaigns are transforming Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea, into a global tourist city. In Seoul, tourism brochures are ubiquitous and free to the visitor and showcase certain attractions and experiences. They project a synecdochical image of the city to visitors and potential visitors using photographs. This paper describes an examination of the photographs found in tourism brochures using a visual methods content analysis.
How to promote technological innovation with green finance policy has been a focal topic in the global green finance field in recent years. Using the difference-in-difference approach model, this paper investigated the impact of the Green Credit Guidance (GCG) policy implemented by the Chinese government in 2012 on the technological innovation of firms in pollution-intensive industries. The empirical results indicated that GCG had a negative impact, not only on research and development (R&D)
Medical tourism is a new global niche market. This market has a significant economic scope, but little research exists regarding the actual effects that medical tourism has on a destination. This paper provides a survey of the history, economic scope and traveler motivations associated with medical tourism. In addition, a discursive analysis explores the implications for the larger medical industry and tourism industry of a destination. A grounded theory is provided that can serve as a foundatio
The demilitarized zone (DMZ) and Dokdo mark South Korea borders with North Korea and Japan respectively. Each borderland is a socially constructed symbolic cultural landscape shaped in part by tourism. In this study, a sample of 2202 online images was inspected using content-semiotic analysis to understand how visual representation of border tourism works. It was found that visitors via social media and government censorship play major roles in constructing representations of (i) alienated borde
The pursuit of sustainable destination tourism should begin with an understanding of resident subjectivities. In this study, residents of Orchid Island, Taiwan, were interviewed using Q method in order to evaluate their subjectivities toward tourism. Forty-two statements regarding a theoretically and historically defined discourse of tourism were
AbstractRepresentations of indigenous Okinawa shisa (Japan) and Kinmen wind lion totems (Taiwan) are popular tourist souvenirs. They are also commonly used in destination tourism promotion as logos or mascots. Some tourism research describes these practices as exploitative and damaging to local culture. Other research suggests that resident consensus, local production and government sponsorship can produce a good souvenir that benefits local identity and economy. This paper reports on a semiotic
Trust between culture is a salient issue to tourism studies. But the effect of tourism on culture is disputed, and surrounded by a basic lack of trust. Tourists as well as hosts categorise 'others' by their most immediately functional role, which is economic. Yet difference is an unavoidable social fact and does not exempt one from the responsibility of social relationships. For tourism, simulations of 'the other' are desired but must be always kept distant. So difference is accentuated by comme
Abstract Jeju Island is a major domestic tourism destination in South Korea and is an increasingly significant international tourism destination, especially for the Japanese and Chinese markets. The Jeju provincial government strongly supports the tourism industry and has, along with the Korean central government, invested heavily in the construction of tourism infrastructure and tourism promotion. There is an abundance of printed literature available to tourists, in the form of brochures and gu
