우승석 교수의 연구실은 뇌의 구조적 및 기능적 변화를 고해상도 뇌 영상 기법을 통해 분석하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 주로 DTI, 구조적 MRI, 그리고 대사 영상 등을 활용해 정신질환인 우울증, 간질, 청각성 간질 등에서의 뇌 구조 이상과 신경망 기능 이상을 규명하고자 합니다. 특히 전두엽 피질, 편측 피질, 히포크암프스 등의 뇌 영역에서의 형태학적 변화와 유전적 소인(예: TPH2 유전자 다형성)의 영향을 연구하고 있습니다. 이는 정신질환의 생물학적 기반을 밝히고 조기 진단 및 치료 전략 개발에 기여하고자 하는 목적이 있습니다.

Diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) is a noninvasive medical imaging tool used to investigate the structure of white matter. The signal contrast in DTI is generated by differences in the Brownian motion of the water molecules in brain tissue. The JME patients showed complex structural abnormalities in the corpus callosum, frontal lobe and hippocampus, and also a decreased gray matter concentration of the prefrontal region, which all suggests there is an abnormal neural network in the JME brain.
We showed atrophy and regional shape contractions in the hippocampi of patients with MDD, which were more dominant on the left side. The causes of hippocampal damage could be the hypersecretion of glucocorticoids contributing to neuronal death or the failing of adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus.
The tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH2) gene is considered a promising genetic candidate regarding its association with a predisposition to major depressive disorder (MDD). Local gyrification reflects the early neural development of cortical connectivity, and is regarded as a potential neural endophenotype in psychiatric disorders. A progressive decrease in the NAA/tCr ratio in the pACC of patients with MDD was demonstrated and the decrease in this ratio was at the highest rate in the early period after illness onset. These findings indicate the neuronal degeneration and dysfunction of the pACC, and the importance of early clinical intervention in female patients with MDD.
