Fabrication strategies that pursue "simplicity" for the production process and "functionality" for a device, in general, are mutually exclusive. Therefore, strategies that are less expensive, less equipment-intensive, and consequently, more accessible to researchers for the realization of omnipresent electronics are required. Here, this study presents a conceptually different approach that utilizes the inartificial design of the surface roughness of paper to realize a capacitive pressure sensor
The fundamental challenge in designing transparent pressure sensors is the ideal combination of high optical transparency and high pressure sensitivity. Satisfying these competing demands is commonly achieved by a compromise between the transparency and usage of a patterned dielectric surface, which increases pressure sensitivity, but decreases transparency. Herein, a design strategy for fabricating high-transparency and high-sensitivity capacitive pressure sensors is proposed, which relies on t
A novel stress-induced method to grow semimetallic Bi nanowires along with an analysis of their transport properties is presented. Single crystalline Bi nanowires were found to grow on as-sputtered films after thermal annealing at 260-270 degrees C. This was facilitated by relaxation of stress between the film and the thermally oxidized Si substrate that originated from a mismatch of the thermal expansion. The diameter-tunable Bi nanowires can be produced by controlling the mean grain size of th
A thermochromic-based interactive sensor that can generate local color switching and pressure mapping is developed using a 2D array of resistive pressure sensor switch. This thermochromic-based interactive sensor will enable the visualization of localized information in arbitrary shapes with dynamic responses in the context of serial/parallel pressure mapping and quantifying capability without optoelectronic arrays.
Inorganic 2D materials offer a new approach to controlling mass diffusion at the nanoscale. Controlling ion transport in nanofluidics is key to energy conversion, energy storage, water purification, and numerous other applications wherein persistent challenges for efficient separation must be addressed. The recent development of 2D membranes in the emerging field of energy harvesting, water desalination, and proton/Li-ion production in the context of green energy and environmental technology is
Scanning probe instruments have expanded beyond their traditional role as imaging or "reading" tools and are now routinely used for "writing." Although a variety of scanning probe lithography techniques are available, each one imposes different requirements on the types of probes that must be used. Additionally, throughput is a major concern for serial writing techniques, so for a scanning probe lithography technique to become widely applied, there needs to be a reasonable path toward a scalable
Ideal electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers can absorb all incident EM waves, regardless of the incident direction, polarization, and frequency. Absorptance and reflectance are intrinsic material properties strongly correlated with electrical conductivity; hence, achieving perfect absorptance with zero reflectance is challenging. Herein, we present a design strategy for preparing a nearly ideal EM absorber based on a layered metal that maximizes absorption by utilizing multiple internal reflection
The battery shape is a critical limiting factor affecting foreseeable energy storage applications. In particular, deformable metal–air battery systems can offer low cost, low flammability, and high capacity, but the fabrication of such metal–air batteries remains challenging. Here, it is shown that a shape‐reconfigurable‐material approach, in which the deformable components composed of micro‐ and nanoscale composites are assembled, is suitable for constructing polymorphic metal–air batteries. By
Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations have been investigated in an individual Bi nanowire grown by on-film formation of nanowires that is a growth method producing extremely high-quality single-crystalline nanowires. The variation of observed SdH oscillations with transverse and longitudinal magnetic fields to the axis of the Bi nanowire is qualitatively consistent with the geometry of the highly anisotropic Fermi surfaces of Bi, and in turn, reveals the growth direction of the nanowires and demo
Wetting of the liquid metal on the solid electrolyte of a liquid metal battery controls the operating temperature and performance of the battery. Liquid sodium electrodes are particularly attractive because of their low cost, natural abundance, and geological distribution. However, they wet poorly on a solid electrolyte near its melting temperature, limiting their widespread suitability for low-temperature batteries to be used for large-scale energy storage systems. Herein, we develop an isolate
Programmable logic arrays (PLA) constitute a promising architecture for developing increasingly complex and functional circuits through nanocomputers from nanoscale building blocks. Here we report a novel one-dimensional PLA element that incorporates resistive switch gate structures on a semiconductor nanowire and show that multiple elements can be integrated to realize functional PLAs. In our PLA element, the gate coupling to the nanowire transistor can be modulated by the memory state of the r
Abstract Color generation by thermochromic materials offers several advantages over the light‐based technology: a passive circuit element‐driven simplified device layout, cost‐effectiveness, and clear visibility. However, thermochromic materials need to be effectively coupled with an external heat source to induce coloration, which generally involves slow heat transfer processes that are not suitable for potential display applications. Here, a method for molecular printing of a thermochromic ink
Although much research work has focused on identifying different factors that affect presence, it is still not clear how to effectively combine these results to create a content with high presence with respect to a given hardware set-up and limited computing resources. This paper proposes a concept of level of presence (LOP) in which we attempt to select a set of presence elements and their levels to maximize their “contribution” toward the overall presence subject to system resources. Such an o
