Fluctuations in heart rate above 0.03 Hz reflect autonomic modulation of sinoatrial node activity. To assess the dynamics of autonomic nervous activity during and immediately after exercise, we determined the power spectrum of heart rate and respiratory fluctuations in 43 normal subjects without known cardiac disease, 8 patients with severe congestive heart failure, and 6 patients status-post cardiac transplantation before, during, and after graded-work load exercise on a cycle ergometer. Before
Transplantation-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) is a devastating complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. TA-TMA likely represents the final stage of vascular endothelial injury; however, its pathophysiology is largely unknown, making clinical management difficult. Recently, the association of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) with the development of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic uremic syndrome has been reported. Thus, we explored whether N
The abnormal immune response accompanying IgG4-related autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is presently unclear. In this study, we examined the role of plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC) activation and IFN-α production in this disease as well as in a murine model of AIP (MRL/Mp mice treated with polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid). We found that the development of AIP in treated MRL/Mp mice occurred in parallel with pancreatic accumulation of pDCs producing IFN-α, and with pDC depletion and IFN-α-blocking
Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) is 1 of the critical complications that often occurs following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Thus far, various types of prediction scores have been created using statistical calculations. The primary objective of this study was to establish and validate the machine learning-dependent index for predicting aGVHD. This was a retrospective cohort study that involved analyzing databases of adult HSCT patients in Japan. The alternati
Cord blood transplantation (CBT) is an effective therapeutic option for adults with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) after the conventional cyclophosphamide and total body irradiation (CY/TBI) regimen, but posttransplant relapse is still of high importance. High-dose cytarabine (HDCA) can be added to CY/TBI for an intensified regimen; however, its additional effects have not yet been completely elucidated. Therefore, we conducted a cohort study to compare the p
We report a novel approach to bone marrow (BM) conditioning using c-kit-targeted chimeric antigen receptor T (c-kit CAR-T) cells in mice. Previous reports using anti-c-kit or anti-CD45 antibody linked to a toxin such as saporin have been promising. We developed a distinctly different approach using c-kit CAR-T cells. Initial studies demonstrated in vitro killing of hematopoietic stem cells by c-kit CAR-T cells but poor expansion in vivo and poor migration of CAR-T cells into BM. Pre-treatment of
We propose a transparent boundary for the finite-element beam-propagation method to analyze the beam propagation in a finite computational window. In this method, a transparent boundary condition is derived by assuming a beam to be a plane wave in the vicinity of a virtual boundary, which eliminates undesirable reflections from a virtual boundary.
DEX treatment is a candidate for advanced RCC therapy by inhibiting the activation of NF-kappa B and its downstream products such as IL-6, IL-8 and VEGF.
Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is an essential therapy for acquired aplastic anemia and prognosis has recently improved. However, engraftment failure and graft-versus-host disease are potential fatal complications. Various risk factors for poor prognosis have been identified, such as patient age and human-leukocyte antigen disparity, but the relationship between donor age and prognosis is still unknown. Therefore, we performed a cohort study to compare the prognosis of unrelated bone mar
Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with the conventional cyclophosphamide and total body irradiation (CY/TBI) regimen is an essential therapeutic strategy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adults. Medium-dose etoposide (VP16, 30-40 mg/kg) can be added to intensify this CY/TBI regimen and reduce relapse; however, differences in prognosis between the VP16/CY/TBI and CY/TBI regimens have not yet been fully analyzed. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using a Ja
Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a major complication after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) and can be life threatening. To analyze risk factors and prognosis, we retrospectively reviewed 249 cases receiving allo-SCT in our institution. Median age was 47 years (13-72 years). Disease status at SCT was progressive in 73 cases. Conditioning was myeloablative (MAC) in 146 cases. Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) grade II-IV treated with prednisolone occurred in 82 cases, and cytome
