To improve light extraction from organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), we introduced a photonic crystal pattern into the glass substrate of an OLED. The periodic modulation converts the guided waves in the high-refractive-index indium-tin-oxide/organic layers into external leaky waves. We used the finite-difference time-domain method to optimize the structural parameters of the photonic crystal pattern and to analyze the microcavity effect by the metallic cathode of the OLED. With the use of an
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between main air pollutants and all cancer mortality by performing a meta-analysis. We searched PubMed, EMBASE (a biomedical and pharmacological bibliographic database of published literature produced by Elsevier), and the reference lists of other reviews until April 2018. A random-effects model was employed to analyze the meta-estimates of each pollutant. A total of 30 cohort studies were included in the final analysis. Overall risk estimate
Since ancient times, licorice, the root of <i>Glycyrrhiza glabra</i>, has been known to have a wide spectrum of therapeutic effects. Glycyrrhizin is cleaved to glycyrrhizic acid, which is subsequently converted to glycyrrhetic acid by human intestinal microflora. Glycyrrhetic acid is a potent inhibitor of 11<i>β</i>-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11<i>β</i>-HSD) and performs a range of corticosteroid-like activities. The pharmacologic effects of licorice contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antio
Knee osteoarthritis was significantly associated with deteriorated mental health and health-related QoL in middle-aged and older men and women. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2020; 20: 379-383.
Complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most common blood tests requested by clinicians and evaluates the total numbers and characteristics of cell components in the blood. Recently, many investigations have suggested that the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), arteriosclerosis, type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and metabolic syndrome can be predicted using CBC components. This review introduces that white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscula
Serum uric acid is independently associated with the presence of NAFLD, and uric acid may be a useful additional measure in assessing the risk of NAFLD in the clinical setting.
OBJECTIVES To investigate the relationship between handgrip strength and pulmonary function. DESIGN Cross‐sectional study of a representative sample of older Korean women. SETTING The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. PARTICIPANTS Community‐dwelling women aged 65 and older without chronic diseases or pulmonary disease (N=605). MEASUREMENTS Handgrip strength was measured using a digital hand dynamometer, and pulmonary function was tested according to guidelines of the Ameri
Inflammation may be linked to the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. However, two conflicting observational results were recently reported on the relationship between the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) and the risk of colorectal cancer. Few epidemiologic studies have examined the association between inflammatory markers and the risk of colorectal cancer. We prospectively examined the mortality and incidence risk for colon and rectal cancers among 424,419 Koreans (108,907 men and 31
This study investigated the effects of coenzyme Q(10) supplementation on metabolic parameters, inflammatory markers, arterial stiffness, and fatigue in obese subjects. We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-center study on 51 obese subjects with a body mass index (BMI) of ≥25 kg/m(2). Subjects were randomized into either a coenzyme Q(10) (200 mg/day) group (n = 26, BMI = 27.9 ± 2.3 kg/m(2), age = 42.7 ± 11.3 years) or a placebo group (n = 25, BMI = 26.8 ± 2.8 kg/m(2)
