This study suggests that MPV response to low-dose collagen may be a useful indicator of platelet propensity to activation. Further studies are warranted to correlate MPV with classical platelet aggregation tests and with the use of platelet-active drugs.
Omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) reduce postprandial triacylglycerol (TG) concentrations. This study was undertaken to determine whether this effect was due to reduced production or increased clearance of chylomicrons. Healthy subjects (n = 33) began with a 4-week, olive oil placebo (4 g/d) run-in period. After a 4-week wash-out period, subjects were randomized to supplementation with 4 g/d of ethyl esters of either safflower oil (SAF), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for 4 w
Permeation through a porous polycarbonate membrane, on which a thermosensitive polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), was immobilized, was investigated. For photoimmobilization of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), photoreactive azidophenyl group was connected to the polymer either at a chain terminal or in side chains. The two types of derivatized polymers had different lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Prescribed amounts of the derivatized polymer were cast on the polycarbonate membrane and
Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is associated with mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on maintenance hemodialysis. The correct diagnosis of PEW is extremely important in order to predict clinical outcomes. However, it is unclear which parameters should be used to diagnose PEW. Therefore, this retrospective observational study investigated the relationship between mortality and nutritional parameters in ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis. A total of 144 patients were en
Conjugated octadecadienoic acids (18:2, conjugated linoleic acids) have been shown to be anticarcinogenic and may influence growth and nutrient partitioning. The delta 9c,11t-18:2 isomer (rumenic acid, RA) is most common in both food sources and human tissues. To determine if maternal diet can influence milk RA concentration, breastfeeding women (n = 16) were enrolled in a 3-wk crossover study. Women initially consumed minimal amounts of food containing RA during week 1, then were assigned rando
The first indication of platelet activation is an increase in mean platelet volume (MPV). n-3 FA are known to inhibit platelet function and to reduce the risk for coronary heart disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of EPA and DHA on MPV. Healthy subjects received olive oil placebo for 4 wk and then were randomly assigned to receive 4 g of ethyl esters of either safflower oil (n = 11), EPA (n = 10), or DHA (n = 12) for 4 wk. At the end of placebo run-in and treatment pe
Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA, a polyelectrolyte brush) was grafted onto a porous glass filter in order to construct a pH-dependent system for the control of liquid permeation. The porous glass filter was treated with octadecyldimethyl(N,N-diethylamino)silane and subjected to glow-discharge treatment to facilitate graft polymerization of the acrylic acid. The surface was analyzed using measurement of the water contact angle, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
