Many of the flavonoids found in grapes and grape products such as juice or wine have been known to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, platelet inhibitory and arterial relaxing effects either in vitro, in animal studies and in human trials. This study was designed to test the effect of Concord grape juice consumption on altering blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Forty subjects were given 5.5 ml/kg body weight/day of either Concord grape juice (CGJ) or a calorie-matched placebo drink eve
In a placebo-controlled double-blinded study, the effect of 8 weeks of grape juice was compared to the effect of isocaloric placebo juice. Volunteers with a systolic blood pressure > 130 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg were recruited. A total of 40 healthy subjects were randomized to receive isocaloric juices for 8 weeks. Twenty-one subjects were instructed to consume 5.5 mL/kg daily of grape juice (GJ), and 19 subjects consumed placebo juice (PJ). Plasma antioxidant vitamin C, total
The Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) is claimed to have beneficial properties for human health, such as anti-bacterial, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The antioxidant effects of the mushroom may be partly explained by protection of cell components against free radicals. We evaluated the effect of aqueous Chaga mushroom extracts for their potential for protecting against oxidative damage to DNA in human lymphocytes. Cells were pretreated with various concentrations
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a high-fructose diet on cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related parameters in growing rats. Three-week-old female Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four experimental groups; a regular diet group (RD: fed regular diet based on AIN-93G, n = 8), a high-fructose diet group (30Frc: fed regular diet with 30% fructose, n = 8), a high-fat diet group (45Fat: fed regular diet with 45 kcal% fat, n = 8) or a high fruct

This study aimed to observe the relationship between iodine nutrition status (dietary iodine intake and estimated iodine intake based on urinary iodine concentration (UIC)) and thyroid disease-related hormones. This study involved 6090 subjects >19 years old with valid UIC, assessed between 2013 and 2015 by the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, using a stratified, multistage, clustered probability-sampling design. The estimated iodine intake in participants was measured us
The ketogenic diet has long been recommended in patients with neurological disorders, and its protective effects on the cardiovascular system are of growing research interest. This study aimed to investigate the effects of two-week of low-calorie ketogenic nutrition drinks in obese adults. Subjects were randomized to consume drinks either a ketone-to-non-ketone ratio of 4:1 (KD 4:1), a drink partially complemented with protein at 1.7:1 (KD 1.7:1), or a balanced nutrition drink (BD). Changes in b
Nutritional support of preterm infants by total parental nutrition (TPN) is common; however, TPN compromises intestinal structure and enzyme activity. Our goal was to develop a piglet model to assess the effect of limited enteral stimulation with formula and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on intestinal morphology and enzyme activity. A nutritionally complete TPN solution was infused for 7 days and piglets were gavaged twice daily with 4 ml sterile water, formula, or formula containing 1,00
Early prevention of sarcopenia could be an important strategy for muscle retention, but most studies have focused on subjects aged 65 or older. Therefore, in this study we investigated the effects of leucine-enriched protein supplementation on muscle condition in a sample including late middle-aged adults. A 12-week intervention was performed for 120 healthy community-dwelling adults by providing either leucine-enriched protein supplement [leucine 3 g, protein mixture (casein 50% + whey 40% + so
This is the first study to investigate the association between vegetable and fruit consumption and depression in a Korean population. Additional epidemiological studies are needed to find the underlying reasons for that association.
Enteral insulin-like growth factor-I augmented intestinal morphology and disaccharidase activity in parenterally fed piglets over that observed with partial enteral nutrition alone. Thus enteral insulin-like growth factor-I may represent an efficacious clinical adjunct to promote intestinal development of parenterally fed neonates.
Ewing's sarcoma is a poorly characterized malignant tumor with a relatively uniform histologic appearance, made up of densely packed small cells with round to oval nuclei, without distinct cell borders and without any structural differentiation. Often the diagnosis has to be made by exclusion. Recently, it has been made possible to identify characteristic chromosomal rearrangements associated with certain solid tumors. More than 85% of Ewing's sarcoma and peripheral neuroectodermal tumor present
