Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CC) are the major adult liver cancers. The existence of combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (CHC), a histopathologic intermediate form between HCC and CC, suggests phenotypic overlap between these tumors. Here, we applied an integrative oncogenomic approach to address the clinical and functional implications of the overlapping phenotype between these tumors. By performing gene expression profiling of human HCC, CHC, and CC, we identif
Increased overall efficiency in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) requires electrolytes with improved ionic conductivity and interfacial contact between the electrolyte and the dye-adsorbed semiconductor nanoparticles in the cell. The supramolecular electrolyte presented here (see Figure) achieves this due to its different behavior in the liquid and solid states. Our results suggest that visceral abdominal adiposity is correlated with hepatic steatosis in healthy living liver donors.
The GWAS and the subsequent validation study identified new variants associated with the risk of CHB. These findings may advance the understanding of genetic susceptibility to CHB.
Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) can act as both a tumor suppressor and a stimulator of tumor progression. We have examined the relationship between polymorphisms of the TGF-beta1 gene and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A total of 1,237 Korean subjects were prospectively enrolled; 1,046 patients with chronic HBV infection and 191 healthy controls with no evidence of recent or remote HBV infection. The patients we
Twenty-four-week oltipraz treatment significantly reduced the liver fat content in patients with NAFLD. Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT01373554).
Gene expression profiling using microarray technologies provides a powerful approach to understand complex biological systems and the pathogenesis of diseases. In the field of liver cancer research, a number of genome-wide profiling studies have been published. These studies have provided gene sets, that is, signature, which could classify tumors and predict clinical outcomes such as survival, recurrence, and metastasis. More recently, the application of genomic profiling has been extended to id
Hepatitis A infection is caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV), which is transmitted through the fecal-oral route. Lifelong protective antibodies are present after infection. The number of cases of adult hepatitis A has progressively been increasing during the last several decades in Korea. In addition, the pattern of age-specific seroprevalence of anti-HAV has changed with economic growth. The prevalence of anti-HAV in the 10-50-year age range has declined rapidly during the last 3 decades. As
In initial staging of HCC, (18)F-FDG PET/CT provided additional information, impacting the patients with BCLC (stages A and B) and AJCC (T2 and T3) classifications. Its use might be thus appropriate for these patient subsets, especially if hepatic resection or liver transplantation is planned.
HCC patients with PVT who underwent radioembolization achieved comparable survival to patients who received sorafenib, even after application of IPW. The radioembolization group also experienced fewer severe adverse effects. Radioembolization can be considered a new treatment option for patients with HCC with PVT.
The RFMP assay has practical advantages over existing methods, including better quantitative detection of mixed populations and detection of genotype variants without need for population-based cloning, enabling reliable viral genotyping in laboratories and efficient study of the relationship between viral genotypes and clinical outcome.
