ABSTRACT We use CANUCS JWST/NIRCam imaging of galaxies behind the gravitationally-lensing cluster MACS J0417.5-1154 to investigate star formation burstiness in low-mass (M⋆ ∼ 108 M⊙) galaxies at z ∼ 4.7–6.5. Our sample of 123 galaxies is selected using the Lyman break selection and photometric emission-line excess methods. Sixty per cent of the 123 galaxies in this sample have Hα-to-UV flux ratios that deviate significantly from the range of Hα-to-UV ratio values consistent with smooth and stead
ABSTRACT Using CANUCS imaging we found an apparent major merger of two $z$ ∼ 5 ultra-low-mass galaxies (M⋆∼107M⊙ each) that are doubly imaged and magnified ∼12–15× by the lensing cluster MACS 0417. Both galaxies are experiencing young (∼100 Myr), synchronised bursts of star formation with log (sSFR/Gyr−1) ∼1.3–1.4, yet SFRs of just ∼0.2M⊙ yr−1. They have sub-solar (Z ∼ 0.2Z⊙) gas-phase metallicities and are connected by an even more metal-poor star-forming bridge. The galaxy that forms from the
Abstract We present a new analytical model for the attenuation to Epoch of Reionization (EoR) galaxies by proximate neutral hydrogen gas. Many galaxy spectra in the EoR taken by JWST have shown a flux deficit at wavelengths just redward of the Lyman break, and this has been regarded as resulting from Ly α damping wing absorption by the increasing amount of neutral hydrogen in the line of sight. However, previous attenuation models for the intergalactic medium (IGM) commonly used in photometric r
Abstract We present a star formation rate function (SFRF) at z ∼ 4.5 based on photometric data from the rest UV to optical of galaxies in the CANDELS GOODS-South field using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We evaluate the incompleteness of our sample and correct for it to properly compare the SFRF in this study with those estimated based on other probes. The SFRF is obtained down to ∼10 M ⊙ yr −1 , and it shows a significant excess compared to that estimated from the UV luminosity fu
Abstract We search for H α emitters at z ∼ 7.8 in four gravitationally lensed fields observed in the Hubble Frontier Fields program. We use the Lyman break method to select galaxies at the target redshift and perform photometry in the Spitzer/IRAC 5.8 μ m band to detect H α emission from the candidate galaxies. We find no significant detections of counterparts in the IRAC 5.8 μ m band, and this gives a constraint on the H α luminosity function (LF) at z ∼ 7.8. We compare the constraint with prev
Abstract We present a spectroscopic analysis of a broad-line active galactic nucleus (AGN) selected as a little red dot (LRD) at z = 5.3 behind the Bullet cluster (Bz5.3) based on JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec data. The detection of strong Fe ii , O i , and Ca ii triplet emission lines, along with the evidence of broad Balmer lines, provides strong evidence of a broad-line region (BLR) and an accreting supermassive black hole. Notably, we report the first detection of the λ 1304 bump (i.e., a blend of
Abstract We present a sample of z phot ∼ 10–16 galaxies by exploiting some of the richest JWST NIRCam imaging data, taken in the CANUCS survey in Cycle 1 and the Technicolor (TEC) survey in Cycle 2. The combination of the CANUCS+TEC provides multiepoch, deep NIRCam images in all medium bands (MBs) and broad bands (BBs) onboard NIRCam (22 filters in total), over ∼ 23 <mml:mspace width="1e
Abstract We present a star formation rate function (SFRF) at z ∼ 6 based on star formation rates (SFRs) derived by spectral energy distribution fitting on data from rest-frame UV to optical wavelengths of galaxies in the CANDELS GOODS-South and North fields. The resulting SFRF shows an excess compared to the previous estimations by using rest-frame UV luminosity functions (LFs) corrected for the dust attenuation and is comparable to that estimated from a far-infrared LF. This suggests that the n
Ultra-faint galaxies at high-$z$ are fundamental elements of the early galaxy assembly, and spectroscopic characterization of this population is essential to understand the earliest galaxy evolution. Leveraging the ultra-deep JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec observations of a gravitational lensing field of Abell S1063, taken as part of the GLIMPSE survey, we present spectroscopic properties of 16 galaxies fainter than $M_{\rm UV}=-17$ mag, including the metallicity, dust attenuation, and the ionizing pho
