이 교수의 연구실은 주로 신경계 질환, 특히 운동 장애와 파킨슨병 관련 신경기능 이상의 기전을 전기생리학적 및 뇌자극 기반 기술(TMS 등)을 통해 규명하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 특히 주위 억제 기전의 이상이 운동이석성 이상과 같은 신경질환에 미치는 영향을 연구하며, 줄기세포 치료 등 신경재생 전략의 가능성에도 관심을 기울이고 있습니다. 뇌의 신호 전달 메커니즘과 신경가소성의 기전을 이해함으로써 신경퇴행성질환의 조기 진단 및 치료 전략 개발을 목표로 하고 있습니다.

Disturbances in surround inhibition could account for various movement disorders. Here we test the functional operation of surround inhibition in focal hand dystonia. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was set to be triggered by self-initiated voluntary flexion of the index finger. To investigate the effect of volitional inhibition on cortical inhibitory mechanisms, we performed transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies with a Go/NoGo reaction task in seven healthy subjects. Although restless legs syndrome (RLS) commonly accompanies Parkinson disease (PD), the mechanism of RLS development in PD is still unclear. We investigated the prevalence of RLS in Korean patients with PD, and the possible contributing factors to the development of RLS in those patients. These results suggest that LTC reduces the corticospinal neuronal response to magnetic stimulation, preferentially affecting less excitable neurons. The lack of change in F-wave and CMAP suggests that this effect is mainly derived from the motor cortex.
These results suggest that dominant-side patients have greater neural reserve, allowing them to better cope with PD-related pathological changes (i.e., fewer motor deficits despite similar dopamine reduction) compared to non-dominant-side patients.
