Summary In this study, a subassemblage test was performed using buckling‐restrained braces with an H‐shaped core element, which have been proven in a previous uniaxial component test to have good performance. The loading protocol prescribed the quasi‐static cyclic pattern with stepwise incremental displacement amplitude. Two different end connections (bolted connection and pin connection) and two different buckling‐restrained mechanisms (concrete‐filled tube and hollow steel tube) were examined
As the number of high-rise buildings increases, the floor-to-floor height has been considered as a significant component due to limited city areas. To reduce the floor-to-floor height, a newly developed composite beam using asymmetric steel section with web opening was proposed and experimentally explored. Shear connectors are not used for the proposed composite beam. Instead, longitudinal shear strength is obtained through the bond strength of the interface between concrete and steel, and the b
To reduce the floor-to-floor height, the technical, economical, and convenient (TEC) beam is developed as a new composite beam composed of structural tee, horizontal top stud, precast concrete, stirrup, and cast-in-place concrete slab. The preliminary testing of the proposed system was performed for simple beams, and the results indicated good structural behavior. However, application of the system in the relevant field requires the development of a moment-resisting connection using steel bracke
A buckling-restrained brace (BRB) is a system with excellent earthquake-proof performance, but it does not dissipate energies caused by the load from weak earthquakes or winds. A hybrid BRB (H-BRB), which improved the performance of the BRB, is a type of composite damper system consisting of a BRB and a viscoelastic damper. To explain the wind-induced vibration control performance of H-BRB, a 40-story steel building was designed and used as an analysis model in this study, on the basis of the da
A new composite floor system was developed to reduce floor-to-floor height and to improve structural capacity and fire resistance as compared with existing encased composite floor systems. The proposed system is composed of asymmetric steel beams with web openings, a biaxial hollow concrete slab, and glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) plates. The shear resistance of the typical composite beams is commonly determined based on the shear strength of the steel web alone. However, for the proposed
The number of high-rise buildings has greatly increased in Korea, and storey height is a significant component of tall residential buildings due to the limited city area. To reduce storey height, the wide beam has been adopted in some projects in Seoul such as Trump World, Galleria Palace, and Richencia. The joints between the wide beam and the core wall were too narrow to place the reinforcement, however. This paper investigates a newly developed structural system called the innovative, technic
