This study demonstrates that the application of TORS for partial pharyngectomy and partial laryngectomy is technically feasible and safe.
Transoral robotic surgery was a safe and feasible modality of treating supraglottic cancer. According to our data, transoral robotic surgery demonstrated oncologically and functionally acceptable results in supraglottic cancer patients.
Diallyl disulfide (DADS), a major organosulfur compound of garlic oil, is known to have an anticancer effect on human cancer cells. However, the exact mechanisms of this anticancer activity remain unclear. Here, we investigate the effects of DADS on cell cycle progression in human colon cancer HCT-116 cells by exploring the role played by regulatory molecules such as p53 and cyclin B1. Treatment of HCT-116 cells by DADS induced a marked growth inhibition with a slight reduction in viability and
This study explored the combined effect of number and pattern of mutations in the X/precore regions of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) genome, mutational complex genotype (MCG), on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. Sequence variations were determined by direct sequencing and multiplex restriction fragment mass polymorphism analysis in 150 age-, sex- and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) status-matched patients with and without HCC. In addition, a longitudinal study and an external validation o
Voice- and swallowing-related discomfort in patients who received thyroidectomy showed dynamic changes over time. There was a significant difference in the degree of change according to clinicopathological factors. Patients with these risk factors may benefit from appropriate patient education and various rehabilitation programs for symptom relief.
This study analyzed the prognostic significance of clinico-pathologic factors, including the number of metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) and lymph node ratio (LNR), in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), and attempted to construct a disease recurrence prediction model using machine learning techniques. We retrospectively analyzed clinico-pathologic data from 1040 patients diagnosed with PTC between 2003 and 2009. We analyzed clinico-pathologic factors related to recurrence through logist
Despite the potential utility of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) in regenerative medicine, not much is known about their interaction with residual cancer cells. Here, we studied the direct co-culture effects of ADSCs on H358 lung cancer cells. The paracrine effects of ADSCs were compared to those of the cancer-associated fibroblasts. Extracellular matrix and conditioned media were used to determine the underlying molecules. Time-lapse photography, fluorescence-activated cell sorti
Although previous studies have shown that prostaglandins (PGs), leukotrienes (LTs), and other arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites play an important role in the pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion (OME), the exact role of each AA metabolite in OME is still unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of several individual AA metabolites alone or in combination and AA itself on experimental otitis media in chinchillas. Normal chinchillas were inoculated daily with normal salin
Retropharyngeal lymph node (RPLN) metastases can occur from advanced head and neck malignancies. Surgical access to RPLNs can be challenging. Considering the more aggressive conventional approach methods, there is an increasing need for minimally invasive techniques. Applying transoral robotic surgery (TORS) to access the RPLN has never been reported in the literature. The purpose of this study was to describe our experience with transoral robotic RPLN dissection for oropharyngeal and hypopharyn
