Galectin-3 (Gal-3), a member of the beta-galactoside binding protein family containing the NWGR antideath motif of the Bcl-2 protein family, is involved in various aspects of cancer progression. Previously, it has been shown that the antiapoptotic activity of Gal-3 is regulated by the phosphorylation at Ser(6) by casein kinase 1 (CK1). Here we questioned how phosphorylation at Ser(6) regulates Gal-3 function. We have generated serine-to-alanine (S6A) and serine-to-glutamic acid (S6E) Gal-3 mutan
Elevated NLR predicts worse outcomes in patients with HNSCC.
Sarcopenia, which is characterized by a decrease in muscle quantity or quality, is commonly observed in patients with cancer. Recent research has reported contradictory results on the association between sarcopenia and the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate this discrepancy. We systematically searched three electronic databases to identify articles reporting on the association between sarcopenia and treatment outcome
Our data suggest that preoperative CRT may improve the survival of surgically treated patients with external auditory canal SCC and that definitive CRT may be equivalent to surgical resection.
Elevated platelet count and PLR are associated with poor prognosis in patients with HNSCC.
We investigated the prognostic impact of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). We systematically searched electronic databases and identified articles reporting an association between NLR and treatment results in patients with HNSCC treated with ICIs. Hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) and odds ratios (ORs) for response and disease con
The impact of BMI is determined by the types of cancer treatment. Pretreatment BMI should be considered while deciding treatment.
Sarcopenia was a poor prognostic factor for HNC, regardless of the treatment modality. However, the adverse effects of sarcopenia on survival were more prominent in the surgery group than in the radiotherapy group. Sarcopenia assessment is required for appropriate treatment decision-making.
Elevated NLR predicts worse OS, DSS, PFS and DMFS in patients with NPC.
Various serum biomarkers have been developed for predicting head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) prognosis. However, none of them have been proven to be clinically significant. A recent study reported that the ratio of aspartate aminotransaminase (AST) to alanine aminotransaminase (ALT) had a prognostic effect on non-metastatic cancers. This study aimed to examine the effect of the AST/ALT ratio on the survival of patients with HNSCC. Clinical data of 356 patients with locoregionally ad
The median serum level of SCC-Ag was 1.1 ng/ml (range 0-20). SCC-Ag was significantly higher in patients with advanced T and N classification tumors. Primary sites in the oral cavity, in the hypopharynx, advanced T and N classification, distant metastasis, and SCC-Ag were negatively associated with survival in univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis revealed that SCC-Ag was a significant risk factor for overall survival in cancers of the oral cavity, hypopharynx, and larynx, but not in oropha
The 5-year overall survival rate of early-stage EACSCC was 77%. Postoperative radiation therapy (PORT) was performed in 45% of stage I patients and 68% of stage II patients. Survival analysis of all patients showed no differences between the surgery-only and PORT groups; however, PORT exhibited a better prognosis than surgery alone among patients with stage I disease (p = 0.003, log-rank test). This result indicated that PORT can be the standard therapy for stages I and II EACSCC.
Median body mass index was 21.5 (range 11.6-38.0). According to World Health Organization criteria, the nutritional status of these patients was classified into four groups: underweight (18%), normal (63%), overweight (17%), and obese (1%). Comorbidities were detected in 40% of patients. Multivariate analysis revealed the following factors to be independent factors associated with malnutrition: advanced T stage, metachronous cancer, collagen disease, gastrointestinal disease, and pulmonary disea
