Isolated initial singularities for the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation
Here we study the nonnegative solutions of the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation [u_{t}-\\Delta u+|\ abla u|^{q}=0] in $Q_{\\Omega,T}=\\Omega\ imes(0,T),$ where $q>1,T\\in(0,\\infty] ,$ and $\\Omega$ is a smooth bounded domain of $\\mathbb{R}% ^{N}$ containing $0,$ or $\\Omega=\\mathbb{R}^{N}.$ We consider solutions with a possible singularity at point $(x,t)=(0,0).$ We show that if $q\\geq q_{\\ast}=(N+2)/(N+1)$ the singularity is removable.

- RQ1For $1 < q < q_*$, does a unique very singular solution exist in $\mathbb{R}^N$ and in bounded domains $\Omega$?
- RQ2For $q \geq q_*$, is the isolated initial singularity at $(0,0)$ removable, i.e., does every solution extend smoothly to $t=0$?
- RQ3What is the complete structure of all nonnegative weak solutions to the Dirichlet problem in $Q_{\Omega,\infty}$ with initial singularity at the origin?
- RQ4Can the maximal very singular solution in a bounded domain be characterized as the pointwise limit of solutions with compactly supported initial data?
- For $q \geq q_* = (N+2)/(N+1)$, any nonnegative solution satisfying $\lim_{t\to 0}\int_\Omega u(\cdot,t)\varphi\,dx = 0$ for all $\varphi \in C_c(\Omega \setminus \{0\})$ is smooth up to $t=0$, i.e., the singularity is removable.
- For $1 < q < q_*$, there exists a unique very singular solution $U^\Omega$ in $Q_{\Omega,\infty}$ for bounded $\Omega$, satisfying $\lim_{t\to 0}\int_{B_r} u(\cdot,t)\,dx = \infty$ for all $r>0$.
- In bounded domains, every nonnegative weak solution of the Dirichlet problem is either identically zero, equal to the maximal very singular solution $U^\Omega$, or equals the solution $u^{k,\Omega}$ with initial data $k\delta_0$ for some $k>0$.
- The maximal very singular solution $Y^\Omega$ in a bounded domain $\Omega$ is the pointwise limit of $Y_\eta^\Omega$ as $\eta \to 0$, and satisfies $Y^\Omega \leq Y$ where $Y$ is the VSS in $\mathbb{R}^N$.
- Uniqueness of the VSS $U^\Omega$ is proven by comparison: any VSS $u$ satisfies $u \leq Y^\Omega$, and $Y^\Omega$ is the smallest such supersolution, hence $u = Y^\Omega$.
- The solution structure in $\mathbb{R}^N$ is fully classified: any solution is either zero, the VSS $U$, or a solution with initial data $k\delta_0$ for $k>0$, with uniqueness in each class.
