The dynamics of the three-phase contact line for water and ethanol is experimentally investigated using substrates of various hydrophobicities. Different evolutions of the droplet profile (contact line, R, and contact angle, θ) are found to be dependent on the hydrophobicity of the substrate. A simple theoretical approach based on the unbalanced Young force is used to explain the depinning of the contact line on hydrophilic surfaces or the monotonic slip on hydrophobic substrates. The second par
Nonwetting surfaces engineered from intrinsically hydrophilic metallic materials are promising for self-cleaning, anti-icing, or condensation heat transfer applications where the durability of commonly applied hydrophobic coatings is an issue. In this work, we fabricate and study the wetting behavior and the condensation performance on two metallic nonwetting surfaces with varying number and size of roughness tiers without the need for further hydrophobic coating procedure. On one hand, the surf
Solar evaporation has become a promising and sustainable technique for harvesting freshwater from seawater and wastewater. However, the applicability and efficacy of solar evaporation need further improvement to achieve high production closer to theoretical limits in compact systems. A 3D (three-dimensional) hierarchical inverted conical solar evaporation is developed, which consists of a 3D copper foam skeleton cone decorated with micro-/nano-structures functionalized with graphene oxide, fabri
The accurate prediction and control of the interaction of liquids with hot surfaces is paramount in numerous areas, including cooling applications. We present results illustrating the effect of ambient pressure on the temperature required for a droplet to levitate over a hot surface, i.e., the Leidenfrost temperature. In the present study the dependence of wetting and levitating temperatures on ambient pressure in a range of subatmospheric pressures is reported. Experimental data indicate that t
We present the results of an experimental study investigating electrowetting effects in nano-suspension drops. Wetting of sessile drops of titanium oxide (TiO2) nano-particles dispersed in deionised water was studied under a DC voltage potential. The presence of nano-particles is found to further enhance spreading of drops when a DC potential is applied. Results are explained based on the change in interfacial energy induced by nano-particle adsorption at the solid-liquid interface. An amendment
Solar evaporation contributes to sustainable and environmentally friendly production of fresh water from seawater and wastewater. However, poor salt resistance and high degree of corrosion of traditional evaporators in brine make their implementation in real applications scarce. To overcome such deficiency, a polyanionic electrolyte functionalization strategy empowering excellent uniform desalination performance over extended periods of time is exploited. This 3D superhydrophilic graphene oxide
Wetting plays a major role in the close interactions between liquids and solid surfaces, which can be tailored by modifying the chemistry as well as the structures of the surfaces' outermost layer. Several methodologies, such as chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition, electroplating, and chemical reactions, among others, have been adopted for the alteration/modification of such interactions suitable for various applications. However, the fabrication of low-contact line-pinning hydr
Droplet migration from a micropillar's side to its top due to the wettability gradient imposed by our novel fabrication process.
The study of vapor absorption into liquid desiccant droplets is of general relevance to a better understanding and description of vapor absorption phenomena occurring at the macroscale as well as for practical optimization of dehumidification and refrigeration processes. Hence, in the present work, we provide the first systematic experimental study on the fundamentals of vapor absorption into liquid desiccant at the droplet scale, which initiates a novel avenue for the research of hygroscopic dr
A consensus was built in the first half of the 20th century, which was further debated more than 3 decades ago, that the wettability and condensation mechanisms on smooth solid surfaces are modified by the adsorption of organic contaminants present in the environment. Recently, disagreement has formed about this topic once again, as many researchers have overlooked contamination due to its difficulty to eliminate. For example, the intrinsic wettability of rare earth oxides has been reported to b
