These findings suggest that serum bilirubin might have some protective function against stroke risk in men.
The accuracy for diagnosing AMI using the ICD-10 codes in Korean MIC data was >70%, and reliability was fair to good; however, more attention is required for recoding ICD codes in older patients.
Lipid ratios of TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C and TG/HDL-C, as well as TG and HDL, were consistently associated with MetS and IR in participants without MetS. Lipid ratios might be used as integrated and simple lipid measures.
We found that elderly people with a lower LSI score, regardless of gender, were at risk of increased mortality from all causes, and low LSI score was also associated with cardiovascular mortality.
A J-curve relationship between low DBP and all-cause death was found consistently. The baseline risk in the general population may be considered for risk assessment, particularly in case of interventions that lower DBP below 60 mmHg.
Alcohol, smoking, and the AST/ALT ratio are independently associated with increased risk of esophageal cancer but did not interact synergistically. The combination of the AST/ALT ratio with a questionnaire for alcohol consumption may increase the effectiveness for determining the risk of esophageal cancer.
BDE is an important factor related to suicide attempts in adolescents. In order to reduce suicide attempts, it is necessary to educate the youth about the regulation of BDE and drinking prevention.
Background and Purpose— Bilirubin is not only a waste end-product but also an antioxidant. Bilirubin is known to be associated with decrease in cardiovascular risk in men, but its relationship to stroke was not clearly understood. Methods— Serum bilirubin concentrations were measured in 78 724 health examinees (41 054 men, aged 30–89 years) from 1994 to 2001. The subjects with potential hepatobiliary diseases or Gilbert syndrome were excluded from analysis. Stroke incidence outcome was collected
In the aerobic activity adherence group, further research is needed to identify the influence of occupational physical activity. In the aerobic activity nonadherence group, decreasing sitting hours and increasing endurance exercise may be helpful.
In conclusion, women with HTN showed a distinct association with OA than the normotensives, and this relationship was more apparent among postmenopausal women. Further research is needed for a preventive approach.
Changes in SHS exposure levels have been shown to associate with subsequent type 2 diabetes risk. Reversing high exposure level of SHS in middle-aged adulthood may still lead to worse progressions of type 2 diabetes than remaining stable exposure level.
:Background: There have been few studies reporting the association between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and osteoarthritis (OA) in female subjects performing aerobic exercise or not. The aim of this study is to compare HRQoL between OA patients and non-OA subjects in middle aged Korean women (40-59 y) with/without aerobic physical activity, and also to identify an association between EQ-5D instrument based HRQoL and OA controlling for aerobic exercise. Methods: Thi
Background: Mentholated cigarettes have similar risk with non-mentholated ones and facilitate initiation of smoking by decreasing the harshness, particularly in adolescents. However, menthol use pattern in Korean smokers has not known well. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, questionnaires were collected between April-May 2015 among male workers in 3 health check-up centers (n=400) and university students from 14 universities (n=2,174). Current smokers (128 workers, 473 students) were analyzed
Background: Several reports have raised the possibility that newly addressed lipid measures might be superior to the traditional ones for cardiovascular risk prediction. However, data on the associations between these lipid measures with metabolic syndrome (MetS) is limited. Methods and Results: A cross-sectional study of participants in routine health examinations was performed. The associations between lipid measure variables (total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein
