Book reviews malignant melanoma of skin, oral cavity, larynx, upper airodigestive tract, lung, thyroid, oesophagus, stomach, colon and rectum, bladder and prostate. As might be expected the most definite ideas are ex- pressed in relation to the cervix. On the other hand minimal cancer of the ovary is a very woolly concept with little to recom- mend its inclusion.Nevertheless, this book will provide interesting and informative reading to pathologists whose work involves tumours in any of these fiel
In this paper, the different applications of butyric acid and its current and future production status are highlighted, with a particular emphasis on the biofuels industry. As such, this paper discusses different issues regarding butyric acid fermentations and provides suggestions for future improvements and their approaches.
Violacein-producing bacteria, with their striking purple hues, have undoubtedly piqued the curiosity of scientists since their first discovery. The bisindole violacein is formed by the condensation of two tryptophan molecules through the action of five proteins. The genes required for its production, vioABCDE, and the regulatory mechanisms employed have been studied within a small number of violacein-producing strains. As a compound, violacein is known to have diverse biological activities, incl
Physical model tests on cemented classified tailings and sand backfills have been carried out to determine the strength requirements for stability when vertical fill faces are exposed. The results of this laboratory scale model testing support a three-dimensional analytical solution developed in the paper, whereby the cement strength requirement can be reduced when rock walls are sufficiently close together to help support the backfill by shearing stresses at the wall–backfill contact.Comparison
This study describes Chromobacterium violaceum's use of extracellular membrane vesicles (MVs) to both solubilize and transport violacein to other microorganisms. Violacein is a hydrophobic bisindole with known antibiotic activities against other microorganisms. Characterization of the MVs found they carried more violacein than protein (1.37 ± 0.19-fold), suggesting they may act as a reservoir for this compound. However, MVs are not produced in response to violacein - a ΔvioA isogenic mutant, whi
The Abbotsford-Sumas Aquifer is a shallow, predominantly unconfined aquifer that spans regions in southwestern British Columbia, Canada and northwestern Washington, USA. The aquifer is prone to nitrate contamination because of extensive regional agricultural practices. A 22-month ground water nitrate assessment was performed in a 10-km2 study area adjacent to the international boundary in northwestern Washington to examine nitrate concentrations and nitrogen isotope ratios to characterize local
Abstract A simple method has been developed for measuring creatinine in serum and urine. Small, fast-flowing cation-exchange columns are used to separate creatinine from interfering substances. The creatinine is eluted and determined with the Jaffe reaction. The results agree well with those for the procedure in which Lloyd's reagent is used.
This paper summarises Rolls-Royce's efforts in developing a production capable and industrially robust process for the production of dual-microstructure components. This has been possible through the use of process modeling, full-scale validation trials, detailed microstructural assessment through a variety of destructive and non-destructive methods and mechanical property evaluation. This paper reports the fundamental underlying relationships between thermal history and microstructural evolutio
