Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common clinical syndrome that is characterized by abnormal renal function and structure. The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Controversies Conference in 2019 reviewed the stages of AKI and the definitions of AKI-related terminologies, and discussed the advances in the last decade. Along with serum creatinine level and urine output, more accurate novel biomarkers for predicting AKI are being applied for the early detection of renal dysfunction. A l
Routine skin testing with a cephalosporin before its administration is not useful for predicting immediate hypersensitivity because of the extremely low sensitivity and PPV of the skin test (CRIS registration no. KCT0000455).
We performed an immunohistochemical study on 5 normal marrow samples and 3 fibrotic marrow samples to investigate the cellular distribution of various isoforms of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and their corresponding receptors. Immature hematopoietic precursors strongly expressed PDGF-B, all the TGF-beta isoforms, PDGFRbeta, TGFbetaRI and II, and FGFR1, 3, and 4. Megakaryocytes stained primarily for PDGF-
In a prospective study investigating the therapeutic role of anagrelide in myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia, 20 patients received anagrelide in daily oral doses of 0.5-3 mg. 17 patients were evaluable and received anagrelide for a median of 2 years (range 0.5-4 years). No patient had a clinically appreciable benefit. Bone marrow (BM) examinations at baseline and after 6 and 12 months of treatment were available for 17, 17 and 12 patients, respectively. In all evaluable cases, BM megakaryocy
The objectives of this study were to expand on recent observations that have suggested decreased thrombopoietin receptor (c-Mpl) expression in megakaryocytes of patients with polycythemia vera (PV) and agnogenic myeloid metaplasia (AMM). We applied an immunoperoxidase method with anti-c-Mpl antibody to 55 bone marrow sections from previously untreated patients with chronic myeloproliferative disorder (CMPD) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). These included 8 patients with PV, 15 with AMM, 9 with
A novel SERS-based sandwich immunoassay using DNA aptamers, silica-encapsulated hollow gold nanospheres (SEHGNs) and a gold-patterned microarray was developed for sensitive detection of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) angiogenesis protein markers. Here, a DNA aptamer conjugated to SEHGN was used as a highly reproducible SERS-encoding nanoprobe, and a hybrid microarray including hydrophilic gold wells and other hydrophobic areas was used as a SERS substrate. Target specific DNA aptamers
Little is known about the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We aimed to investigate the long-term trends in CKD prevalence from South Korea including the early pandemic. We used data from 108,152 Korean adults from 2007 to 2020 obtained from a representative longitudinal serial study. We defined CKD as a condition when the participant's estimated glomerular filtration rate was < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, or one-time spot prote
These observations suggest that bone marrow stromal cell bFGF expression in patients with CMPD is abnormally decreased and that the particular staining pattern may complement the morphologic distinction between CMPD and MDS.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections and hospitalization in infants and young children. Here, we analyzed the genetic diversity of RSV using partial G gene sequences in 84 RSV-A and 78 RSV- B positive samples collected in Seoul, South Korea, for 10 consecutive years, from 2010 to 2019. Our phylogenetic analysis revealed that RSV-A strains were classified into either the ON1 (80.9%) or NA1 (19.0%) genotypes. On the other hand, RSV-B strains
This study aims to figure out the worldwide prevalence of anticancer therapy-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) and tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) and the relative risk of each cancer drug. We conducted an analysis of VigiBase, the World Health Organization pharmacovigilance database, 1967-2023 via disproportionate Bayesian reporting method. We further categorized the anticancer drugs into four groups: cytotoxic therapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. Reporting odds
Urinary inflammatory biomarkers may serve as alternative predictive biomarkers in patients with IgAN. Further studies are needed to elucidate the physiological mechanisms and confirm the results.
Aminoceramide mimetic was synthesized and conjugated to N-linked oligosaccharides having multivalent GlcNAc by reductive amination. Ceramide mimetic conjugates with "complex-type" glycan having five or six GlcNAc termini (termed Os Fr. B-Cer) were purified, analyzed by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and finally characterized by MS/MS analysis through liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Binding of Os Fr. B-Cer placed on solid phase polystyrene surface with [3H]cholesterol-labeled liposomes
Sepsis is an important cause of death in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) neonates. Although conventional diagnostic indicator of sepsis has been done by blood cultures, this took much longer time. The measurement of platelet-associated parameters such as mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) become more reliable and accurate parameters as a non-specific marker for sepsis. Our objective is to examine the usefulness of those platelet hematological parameters as a supplement
