The robustness of the integer quantum Hall effect of electron systems is due to the existence of a topological invariant that characterizes the variation of the electron wave function over the Brillouin zone. Topological phenomena are generic features of waves in periodic media, and this article reviews how photonic systems such as waveguide arrays and photonic metamaterials allow exploration and application of topological effects in new physical regimes and in new devices.
Recent technological advances in integrated photonics have spurred on the study of topological phenomena in engineered bosonic systems. Indeed, the controllability of silicon ring-resonator arrays has opened up new perspectives for building lattices for photons with topologically nontrivial bands and integrating them into photonic devices for practical applications. Here, we push these developments even further by exploiting the different modes of a silicon ring resonator as an extra dimension f
We investigate relations between topology and the quantum metric of two-dimensional Chern insulators. The quantum metric is the Riemannian metric defined on a parameter space induced from quantum states. Similar to the Berry curvature, the quantum metric provides a geometrical structure associated to quantum states. We consider the volume of the parameter space measured with the quantum metric, which we call the quantum volume of the parameter space. We establish an inequality between the quantu
We propose a generic protocol to experimentally measure the quantum metric tensor, a fundamental geometric property of quantum states. Our method is based on the observation that the excitation rate of a quantum state directly relates to components of the quantum metric upon applying a proper time-periodic modulation. We discuss the applicability of this scheme to generic two-level systems, where the Hamiltonian's parameters can be externally tuned, and also to the context of Bloch bands associa
We theoretically discuss analogues of the anomalous and the integer quantum Hall effect in driven-dissipative two-dimensional photonic lattices in the presence of a synthetic gauge field. Photons are coherently injected by a spatially localized pump, and the transverse shift of the in-plane light distribution under the effect of an additional uniform force is considered. Depending on pumping parameters, the transverse shift turns out to be proportional either to the global Chern number (integer
We study the stability of Bose condensates with Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in three dimensions against quantum and thermal fluctuations. The ground state depletion of the plane-wave condensate due to quantum fluctuations is, as we show, finite, and therefore the condensate is stable. We also calculate the corresponding shift of the ground state energy. Although the system cannot condense in the absence of interparticle interactions, by estimating the number of excited particles we sh
We investigate the stability of supercurrents in a Bose-Einstein condensate with one-dimensional spin-orbit and Raman couplings. The consequence of the lack of Galilean invariance is explicitly discussed. We show that in the plane-wave phase, characterized by a uniform density, the supercurrent state can become dynamically unstable, the instability being associated with the occurrence of a complex sound velocity, in a region where the effective mass is negative. We also discuss the emergence of
We study ultracold bosons in three dimensions with an anisotropic Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We first carry out the exact summation of ladder diagrams for the two-boson $t$ matrix at zero energy. Then, with the $t$ matrix as the effective interaction, we find the ground-state phase diagrams of bosons in mean field as a function of the spin-orbit coupling, the anisotropy, and the scattering lengths between particles in the same and in different pseudospin states. The resulting phase
We discuss how one can realize a photonic device that combines synthetic dimensions and synthetic magnetic fields with spatially local interactions. Using an array of ring cavities, the angular coordinate around each cavity spans the synthetic dimension. The synthetic magnetic field arises as the intercavity photon hopping is associated with a change of angular momentum. Photon-photon interactions are local in the periodic angular coordinate around each cavity. Experimentally observable conseque
We investigate the phase diagram and the BCS-BEC crossover of a homogeneous three-component ultracold Fermi gas with a U(3)-invariant attractive interaction. We show that the system at sufficiently low temperatures exhibits population imbalance as well as fermionic pairing. We describe the crossover in this system, connecting the weakly interacting BCS regime of the partially population-imbalanced fermion pairing state and the BEC limit with three weakly interacting species of molecules, includi
Interactions of ultracold atoms with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, currently being studied with simulated (artificial) gauge fields, have nontrivial ultraviolet and infrared behavior. Examining the ultrastructure of the Bethe-Salpeter equation, we show that the linear ultraviolet divergence in the bare interaction can be renormalized as usual in terms of low-energy scattering lengths, and that for both bosons and fermions ultraviolet logarithmic divergences are absent. Calculating the leading orde
We study the effects of the quantum geometric tensor, i.e., the Berry curvature and the Fubini-Study metric, on the steady state of driven-dissipative bosonic lattices. We show that the quantum-Hall-type response of the steady-state wave function in the presence of an external potential gradient depends on all the components of the quantum geometric tensor. Looking at this steady-state Hall response, one can map out the full quantum geometric tensor of a sufficiently flat band in momentum space
The striped state of ultracold bosons with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a homogeneous infinite system has, as we show, a constant particle flow, which in a finite-size system would accumulate particles at the boundaries; it is thus not a physical steady state of the system. We propose, as a variational ansatz, a condensate wave function for a weakly trapped system which behaves similarly to the striped state near the center, but does not have particle flow at the boundaries. This state has a li
We study the Bose-Einstein condensate phase transition of three-dimensional ultracold bosons with isotropic Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Investigating the structure of Ginzburg-Landau free energy as a function of the condensate density, we show, within the Bogoliubov approximation, that the condensate phase transition is first order with a jump in the condensate density. We calculate the transition temperature and the jump in the condensate density at the transition for large spin-orbit coupling,
