A planar, compact, dual-band antenna on a semiflexible substrate is proposed for 2.45/5.85 GHz wireless body-area network applications. The proposed antenna is comprised of an I-shaped monopole embedded with an inverted L-shaped slit and an inductive meander line on the front side of the substrate, which excites the higher resonant mode at 5.85 GHz. On the backside, an inverted U-shaped stripline embedded with another inductive meander line is attached to the ground plane to excite the lower res
A wearable dual-band folded-ring antenna, that has directional radiation pattern and offers high-gain, high-efficiency, and low-specific absorption rate (SAR) performance, is presented for 2.45/3.45 GHz off-body communication. The proposed antenna is comprised of two substrates; a folded-ring antenna as a main radiator is printed on a low-loss rigid substrate and a conductive textile is attached to a felt substrate. The conductive textile is used as the ground plane and as a protective shield to
This article presents a wideband bidirectional same-sense circularly polarized (CP) antenna based on metasurface structure. The antenna consists of a rectangular slot and two identical layers of periodic metallic plates as metasurfaces (MSs). The MS structure is formed by 16 unit cells of truncated-corner patches arranged in 4 × 4 configuration. For bidirectional beam realization, the MSs are positioned on both the front and back sides of the primary radiating slot. In the proposed design, the M
A simple-structured single-fed dual-slot broadband antenna with circularly polarized waves is presented. Two semicircular slots etched in the ground plane were used as the radiators. The slots were proximity-coupled to a 50 Ω microstrip feedline printed on the other side of the substrate. The fabricated antenna with an overall size of 101 × 64 × 1.52 mm 3 yielded a very wide –10 dB impedance band
This paper presents a triple-band open-ring high-gain high-efficiency antenna for 2.45/3.0/3.45 GHz wearable applications. The proposed antenna operates at 2.45 GHz for Industrial, Specific, and Medical (ISM) applications, 3.0 GHz for military applications, and 3.45 GHz for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) applications. The proposed triple-band antenna has excellent features for off-body communication, which has directional radiation pattern, high gain, high efficiency, lo
This paper presents a non-uniform metasurface (MS)-based circularly polarized (CP) antenna that is able to perform with a wideband operation characteristic. A squared patch with truncated corners was chosen as a radiating CP source. Then, unlike the conventional CP MS antennas with a uniform MS, the proposed design employed a non-uniform MS placed above the driven patch. Apart from increasing the impedance bandwidth, the non-uniform MS was also capable of generating two additional CP bands in th
A very simple circularly polarised (CP) printed patch antenna with enhanced bandwidth has been designed, fabricated and tested. The antenna consists of two semi‐circular patches and a rectangular ground plane, and is excited by a simple microstrip feedline. The total substrate size is 50 × 50 × 1.52 mm 3 . The measured −10 dB impedance bandwidth is 101% (2.84–8.7 GHz) and the measured 3 dB axial‐ratio (AR) bandwidth is 49.8% (3.95–6.57 GHz). Good agreement is achieved between measured and simula
A wearable dual-port button antenna that excites pattern-diversity dual-polarized waves is proposed for on-/off-body applications. Its simple structure comprises of two radiators and a common ground plane designed into two substrates. The crossed-dipole radiator is made by two symmetric bowtie dipoles printed on a circular-shaped semi-rigid substrate, which covers an ultra-wideband (UWB) application with circular polarization and directional radiation patterns, high gain, and high efficiency sui
An all-textile broadband circularly polarized (CP) antenna assisted by a nonuniform metasurface (MS) is proposed for 5.8 GHz wireless body area networks. The proposed antenna is comprised of a driven radiator of slot antenna and a broadband CP converter of nonuniform MS with 3 × 3 unit-cells. The slot antenna with a hexagonal shape was initially designed for narrow band and linear polarization. A nonuniform MS with a central-notched hexagonal shape is placed on top of the slot antenna, which pro
In this paper, a simple design for a triple-band circularly polarized (CP) antenna with the capability of switching its polarization between dual-sense CPs is presented. The proposed antenna is comprised of a monopole loop antenna as a primary radiator. By placing a parasitic loop around the primary radiator, an additional CP band is achieved. Reconfigurability of the polarization between right-hand CP (RHCP) and left-hand CP (LHCP) at three different frequencies of 2.5, 3.3, and 3.8 GHz was rea
