High doses of glucosamine have been known to induce apoptosis of pancreatic beta cells. The mechanism for this phenomenon has not been clearly elucidated. We aimed to explore the potential mechanisms for glucosamine toxicity in the rat insulinoma cell line INS-1 and in rat native beta cells. We also investigated whether glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 could be protective against glucosamine. Glucosamine exhibited dose-dependent inhibition of cell survival and an increase in the cell population at
Hierarchical structuring of materials in the nanometer regime provides opportunities to achieve extraordinary characteristics of the resulting products. Here, we report unique one-dimensional hierarchical nanostructures consisting of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and polyacrylonitrile (PAN). First, SWNT-in-binary-polymer nanofiber (SbPNF) structures were obtained through the incorporation of PVA-wrapped SWNTs into PAN, followed by the electrospinning of the SWN
We studied the Ti/Au Ohmic contact on (001) plane Ga 2 O 3 single crystal wafer as a function of annealing temperature and crystallographic orientation. The lowest specific contact resistances of ∼5 × 10 −4 Ω·cm 2 were obtained at 400 °C annealing temperature under nitrogen ambience. The Ohmic metal contact became degraded when annealed above 500 °C. The formation of Ti oxide might be responsible for the degradation of Ohmic contact at high annealing temperatures. In comparison with (010) Ga 2 O
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination began for healthcare workers in South Korea at the end of February 2021. This study investigated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody responses after various COVID-19 vaccinations in healthcare workers. Blood specimens of 497 vaccinated healthcare workers were collected. Inoculated vaccines were ChAdOx1 (AstraZeneca/Oxford), BNT162b2 (Pfizer/BioNTech), JNJ-78436735 (Janssen), and mRNA-1273 (Moderna). Each specimen w
With the deployment of the 5G cellular system, the upsurge of diverse mobile applications and devices has increased the potential challenges and threats posed to users. Industry and academia have attempted to address cyber security challenges by implementing automated malware detection and machine learning algorithms. This study expands on previous research on machine learning-based mobile malware detection. We critically evaluate 154 selected articles and highlight their strengths and weaknesse
During the Cold War era, countries with asymmetrical relationships often demonstrated how lower-tier nation states required the alliance and support from top-tier nation states. This statement no longer stands true as country such as North Korea has exploited global financial institutions through various malware such as WANNACRY V0, V1, V2, evtsys.exe, and BRAMBUL WORM. Top tier nation states such as the U.S. are unable to use diplomatic clout or to retaliate against the deferrer. Our study exam
It has been demonstrated that homozygous mutations at the L(2)gl locus in Drosophila result in the development of tumor in the presumptive adult optic centers of the larval brain and of the imaginal discs. We previously cloned an L(2)gl homologue, Rgl-1, in the rat brain. In this study, we analyzed the capability of Rgl-1 in recovering temperature tolerance in the absence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Sop genes, yeast homologues of the Drosophila recessive oncogene Lethal (2) giant larvae.
