Ahmed M.S.

The relationship between a university and its city is considered strategical to achieve university targeted ambitions and visions. The university-city relationship is also encouraged for the benefit of the city, as universities unleash their respective cities’ potentials to act as driving forces not only for their local communities, but also for the whole nation. Therefore, maintaining a mutual relationship between the university and the city is considered essential to accomplish strategic goals
University campuses play a significant role in city transformation to the extent that depends on campuses' openness and location. Therefore, open campuses provide various sets of values to city urbanization different from gated ones. Thus, this study provides a comparative syntactic and socio-spatial analysis between a gated campus and an open one in two different urban settings using space syntax methodology and cell statistical analysis to highlight the impact of campus's openness and location
Abstract Thanks to the leading role of universities in cities as knowledge and innovation hubs, many cities rely on their universities to face their economic and social challenges. On the other hand, universities need their cities to fulfil the capacity needed to satisfy student and staff needs for services and facilities. Therefore, the university-city relationship is considered to be intercorrelated and overlapping. However, due to the need for expansion, universities tend to move out and buil
University campuses are known to be accompanied by physical and economic spatiotemporal patterns that contribute to the urban land expansion process of their respective cities. Therefore, this paper assesses the impact brought by Kyushu University’s Ito campus on the urban land expansion process of Fukuoka City since its establishment. First, ArcGIS software was used to develop urbanity raster maps by aggregating space syntax, spacematrix, and mixed-use index maps. Then, Netlogo software was use
University campuses have proven to play a significant role in the production of cities due to their impact as knowledge and innovation hubs. Therefore, this paper examines the impact caused by building new campuses in suburban areas to see to what extent a campus can affect the transformation process of its respective city. Kyushu University’s Ito campus area was selected to be analysed using space syntax, spacematrix and Mixed-use index to see the impact caused by the campus since 1993 till 201
In order to create secured urban spaces, public safety need to be considered as the duty of citizens as well as official authorities. Therefore, this research focuses on the social environment of public spaces and how to encourage citizens to take prompt actions to detect, report and deter any illegal activities. University campuses are known to be a driving force of knowledge. Moreover, due to campuses’ impact on their surroundings, they are also considered as a driving force of physical, social, cultural, and economic change. Therefore, this paper conducts a statistical multi-variate analysis to uncover campus-neighbourhood interaction and the following socio-economic outcomes. Thirteen different variables related to 43 university campuses in Japan and their neighbourhoods’ attributes have been collect
This research underscores the impact of university campuses, encompassing physical, economic, cultural, and social dimensions of their surroundings. Consequently, the selection of a suitable campus location should consider both the physical appropriateness and the preferences of key users, namely the students. This paper presents a suitability model employing the geographical information system (GIS) weighted overlay methodology to address this concern. The model employs criteria such as land us
Highly populated student areas are known to be accompanied with spatial and social trends that result in disruption and segregation between students and original residents. Therefore, it is essential to understand different factors that affect students’ accommodation preferences and the following residential dynamics. This paper uses agent-based modelling to visualize students’ distribution and housing occupation around university campuses by applying four different scenarios. Results have also

Purpose This paper aims to identify the most suitable location for a university campus in Egypt based on governorates’ social needs by employing the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The paper, then, reflects the findings retrieved from the Egyptian context on the Japanese context to reveal how different countries deal with the location-allocation decision problem for university campuses. Design/methodology/approach The AHP is employed to evaluate and rank Egyptian governorates based on 13 disti
