Uruno教授の研究室では、転写因子Nrf2が酸化的なストレスに対抗する細胞保護反応を制御するメカニズムを解明しており、特に糖尿病、アルツハイマー病、腎症などの代謝性・神経変性疾患におけるNrf2の保護的役割に注目しています。Keap1-Nrf2シグナル経路の制御を遺伝子ノックアウトやトランスジェニックモデルを用いて解析し、臓器特異的・細胞特異的Nrf2活性化の効果を解明しています。その結果、膵島β細胞の保護や糖ホメオスタシスの維持、神経変性の抑制がNrf2依存的であることが示されています。
