Atsumu Kouketsu教授の研究室は、口腔がんの発症メカニズムと治療戦略の解明を柱としており、特にヒトパピローマウイルス(HPV)関連型頭頸部がんの疫学的・病理的特徴と予後との関連を解明しています。また、がん微小環境における免疫抑制機構(MDSC、pDC、IDO1)の役割や、口腔がんの前がん病変におけるバイオマーカーの同定にも注力しています。さらに、骨再生材料や口腔疾患の診断技術開発についても革新的な研究を展開しています。
