Professor Bum-Jin Chung's research lab specializes in thermal-hydraulic phenomena in nuclear reactor safety, with a focus on severe accident analysis, natural convection in molten oxide pools, and condensation heat transfer under accident conditions. The lab conducts experimental and analytical studies using electrochemical analogy techniques and controlled test facilities to investigate heat transfer mechanisms relevant to reactor lower head integrity and steam condensation in the presence of non-condensable gases. Their work contributes to improving the safety and reliability of pressurized water reactors (PWRs) under extreme conditions. The lab emphasizes fundamental heat and mass transfer phenomena with direct applications to nuclear power plant safety systems.

We investigated the heat load imposed on the lower head of a reactor vessel by the natural convection of the oxide pool in a severe accident. Mass transfer experiments using a CuSO4–H2SO4 electroplating system were performed based on the analogy between heat and mass transfer.
