Professor Bung-Nyun Kim's research lab focuses on the impact of environmental exposures—particularly endocrine-disrupting chemicals like bisphenols and phthalates, as well as heavy metals—on child neurodevelopment and mental health. The lab investigates the neurotoxic effects of prenatal and early-life exposure to these pollutants, with a strong emphasis on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cognitive development (e.g., IQ), and comorbid behavioral and psychological outcomes such as depression and problematic internet use. Longitudinal and cross-sectional studies are employed to explore gene-environment interactions, especially between environmental toxins and genetic susceptibility in neuropsychological disorders.

All bisphenols, in particular those at or above the LOD or median levels, were associated with ADHD symptoms at age 6. Further prospective studies are warranted to determine causal inference.
This study found that ADHD comorbidity in IGD patients was associated with poor clinical course of IGD and that the changes in ADHD symptoms were associated with the changes in IGD symptoms over time. Our findings suggest that evaluation and treatment of ADHD symptoms and family environment in IGD patients may be important in improving the prognosis of IGD.
Multi-pollutant mixtures of prenatal and postnatal exposures to four metals affected child IQ at 6 years of age. We found a relationship between manganese exposure at both age 4, and 6 years and children's IQ. Additional studies are warranted to confirm these associations and to control the exposure to different metals during pregnancy and preschool childhood.
