Professor Byung-Cheol Lee's research lab focuses on the intersection of environmental toxicology, metabolic diseases, and immunometabolism, with a particular emphasis on understanding the role of environmental pollutants—such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in road dust—in activating inflammatory and toxicological pathways via the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). The lab also investigates the therapeutic potential of natural compounds, including puerarin, berberine, and *Scutellaria baicalensis*, in mitigating obesity-related metabolic dysfunctions through modulation of macrophage polarization and systemic inflammation. Additionally, the lab explores genetic susceptibility to metabolic and cerebrovascular diseases, integrating bioinformatics, in silico modeling, and in vivo studies to bridge traditional Korean medicine with modern molecular mechanisms.

From the results in this study, we might suggest that Pro/Ala genotype in Taeeumin is associated with the susceptibility to ischemic stroke. To the author's best knowledge, this is the first report to study on genetic level the potential relationship between ischemic stroke and Sasang constitutional medicine, one of traditional Korean medicines (TKM). Authors hope that this study could provide a new approach for the study of ischemic stroke and merit further research.
From these results, baicalin can be a promising treatment option for obesity and its related metabolic diseases based on its anti-inflammatory property.
