Professor Byung Woo Jhun's research lab specializes in pulmonary and infectious diseases, with a primary focus on nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease and its complications, including chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA). The lab investigates clinical phenotypes, prognostic factors, treatment responses, and antimicrobial resistance patterns in NTM and other difficult-to-treat respiratory infections. A key research direction involves evaluating novel and salvage therapies—such as inhaled amikacin and early cidofovir—particularly in non-immunocompromised patients with severe viral or mycobacterial pneumonia. The lab also explores host-pathogen interactions and long-term outcomes in patients with refractory or recurrent disease.

Limited data are available regarding the prognostic factors for patients with nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD). We investigated the prognostic factors associated with long-term mortality in NTM-PD patients after adjusting for individual confounders, including aetiological organism and radiological form. A total of 1445 patients with treatment-naïve NTM-PD who were newly diagnosed between July 1997 and December 2013 were included. The aetiological organisms were as follows:
Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is a relatively uncommon disease that has been poorly characterized. This study investigated the clinical features and treatment outcomes of CPA through a retrospective review of records of patients with newly diagnosed CPA between January 2008 and January 2012. A total of 70 CPA patients, which included 51 (73%) males, had a median age of 55 years. Fifty-seven patients (81%) had a history of pulmonary tuberculosis and pulmonary disease caused by nontubercul
The benefits of treatment with antiviral therapy for severe adenovirus (AdV) pneumonia are not well established. We described the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of early cidofovir treatment of severe AdV pneumonia in non-immunocompromised patients. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all patients diagnosed with severe AdV pneumonia between 2012 and 2014. A total of seven non-immunocompromised patients with severe AdV pneumonia were identified, and all isolates typ
Refractory MAC-LD is commonly caused by reinfection with new strains rather than persistence of the original strain, which may explain the infrequent development of macrolide resistance in refractory MAC-LD. Clinical trial registered with www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT00970801).
Nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease (NTM-LD) is increasingly recognized as an important predisposing condition for the development of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), but there are limited data on the risk factors for CPA development in NTM-LD patients. We reviewed the medical records of 566 patients who, at the time of diagnosis of NTM-LD, did not have CPA and who received ≥12 months of treatment for NTM-LD between January 2010 and June 2015. Of these patients, 41 (7.2%) developed C
Although guidelines recommend amikacin (AMK) inhalation therapy for difficult-to-treat nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease (NTM-LD), data are limited regarding the safety and clinical efficacy of this salvage therapy. We retrospectively evaluated the treatment outcomes of 77 patients with refractory NTM-LD caused by Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABC) or M. avium complex (MAC) who initiated AMK inhalation therapy between February 2015 and June 2016. MABC was the most commo
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a threat to public health and is the leading cause of death globally. Isoniazid (INH) is an important first-line agent for the treatment of TB considering its early bactericidal activity. Resistance to INH is now the most common type of resistance. Resistance to INH reduces the probability of treatment success and increases the risk of acquiring resistance to other first-line drugs such as rifampicin (RIF), thereby increasing the risk of multidrug-resistant-TB. Studies
NTM-infected patients had poor prognosis when compared to TB patients or the general population, especially for NTM and TB coinfection. NTM mortality was associated with certain demographic characteristics, but long-term use of macrolides may provide survival benefits.
Initial PEC may be related to a milder disease status on admission, compared with normal PEC in patients with AEP. This may help to stratify disease severity in AEP.
There are no accurate data on the relationship between nodal station and diagnostic performance of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA). We evaluated the impact of nodal station and size on the diagnostic performance of EBUS-TBNA in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Consecutive patients who underwent EBUS-TBNA of mediastinal or hilar lymph nodes for staging or diagnosis of NSCLC were included in this retrospective study. Between May 2009 an
Rapid corticosteroid tapering may be an acceptable treatment strategy for managing AEP patients with initial eosinophilia.
