Professor Cem Işık's research lab focuses on the interplay between economic development, sustainability, and socio-environmental factors, with a strong emphasis on tourism, energy consumption, and environmental policy. The lab investigates dynamic relationships among economic growth, renewable energy, tourism demand, and CO2 emissions using advanced econometric models such as panel cointegration, VECM, and bootstrap methods. A key focus is on understanding the role of uncertainty—particularly economic and policy-related—on tourism behavior and sustainability outcomes. The lab also explores the impact of ESG factors on sustainable development goals in emerging economies, especially within the BRICS nations.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between tourism development, renewable energy consumption, and economic growth in the United States, France, Spain, China, Italy, Turkey, and Germany using an innovative bootstrap panel Granger causality model. The results show that tourism development and economic growth are interdependent in Germany; whereas tourism development induces economic growth in China and Turkey, the reverse is true in Spain. Causal relationships betwe
The global economic outlook is more uncertain than ever before and sensitive to uncertainties related to a variety of economic policies decisions of all stakeholders and governments. These perceived uncertainties may be the culprit in shrinking the size of overall economic activity. Under increasing uncertainties, travel and vacation plans of consumers can be canceled or postponed. Therefore, policy-related economic uncertainties are expected to affect tourism demand beyond well-established econ
This paper investigates the dynamic causalities between economic growth, financial development, international trade, tourism expenditure and/on the CO2 emissions in Greece over the period of 1970–2014. For this purpose, the Zivot-Andrews unit root tests and the Autoregressive-Distributed Lag (ARDL) models were applied. The Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and the robustness of causality test results indicate that Greece’s economic growth, financial development, international trade, tourism e
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between solo female travel risks, anxiety, and their travel intentions. The moderating role of online psychological-social support between anxiety and solo female travel intentions was explored as well. Data was collected through two Facebook groups for solo female travelers. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and moderation analyses were conducted to test the hypothesized relationships among variables. Findings indicate that solo female
This paper analyzes the legitimacy of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis for a group of seven (G7) countries over the period 1995–2015. In addition to testing the EKC speculation, the authors also would like to understand the ways in which increases in renewable energy consumption and the international tourism receipt affect the CO2 emissions in G7 countries, because the energy and tourism sectors may have considerable direct impacts on CO2 emissions. In this investigation, a panel
Abstract In this study, we investigate the impacts of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) factors on sustainable development goals (SDGs) for BRICS‐11 countries. The AMG, FMOLS, DOLS, and ARDL models are applied. While we found negative impacts of environmental factors (ENVf) on SDGs for Argentina, Ethiopia, and China, we found positive impacts of social factors (SOCf) on SDGs for South Africa and Argentina. Additionally, while we found positive impacts of governance factors (GOVNf) on S
Abstract Asia–Pacific countries are experiencing rapid economic growth. Is this growth ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors‐based and aligned growth? Therefore, this study investigates the connections between ESG indicators and economic growth in East Asia Pacific and South Asia. To achieve this aim, we employed the FMOLS, DOLS, and AMG models. While the AMG model highlights significant long‐term positive effects of the environmental (EFs) and governance factors (GOVNF) on economi
