Kai教授の研究室は、ウイルスの病原性機構とその制御を解明するため、特に麻疹ウイルス(MeV)やニパウイルス(NiV)をモデルとして、ウイルスと宿主の相互作用、特にウイルスの細胞内侵入機構、宿主のインターフェロン応答への回避機構、およびウイルスを用いたがん治療の開発に注力しています。特に、麻疹ウイルスをがん治療のオナコロジカルウイルスとして改造し、膵がんや乳がんなどの腫瘍に特異的に感染・破壊する新規ワクチンや治療法の開発を推進しています。また、ウイルスの宿主因子との相互作用や、ウイルス感染に伴う細胞内シグナルの再編についても、分子生物学的手法を用いて解明しています。

Measles is a highly contagious human disease caused by measles virus (MeV) and remains the leading cause of death in children, particularly in developing countries.
