Daisuke Hirano教授の研究室は、南極と北極の極域海洋・氷河境界における熱・塩分の輸送とその変動を、観測データと数値モデルを統合して解明しています。特に、南極氷棚下の温水流入や極域の多孔性水塊生成過程(例:バーロー沿岸ポリニャ)に注目し、氷・海洋相互作用が海面上昇に与える影響を定量的に評価しています。また、深海水の生成と混合過程、特にケープダーリー付近の底水形成機構の解明にも貢献しています。
